Cupboard question

Postby tandempair » Sat Jul 01, 2017 7:31 pm

Lots of questions from me lately. Here is another. We have a 12X6 aluminum CTC, work in progress. Project was put on hold, but we are getting back to it now. Quite a while ago, we bought a lower cabinet from Big Lot (assembly required) that is a kitchen cabinet with 2 doors and a bank of drawers, has a towel holder on one end and and a marble top. Just the size I had in mind for cooking and kitchen supplies. It Has wheels, but we would not be using those if we put it in the CTC. We are thinking of having the cabinet mounted next to the side door. Cabinet is probably 45 inches long. Is it too heavy to use due to the marble top? Will the weight be distributed properly for a good tow? I recently priced some other lower cabinets. Couldn't find any specifically for RV's so I looked at bathroom vanity units at the Restore and a salvage place. I found 2 that would work, size wise, but they seemed heavy too. I would just as soon use the one from Big Lot if I can. I will use a 2 burner induction cooker sometimes, if we are cooking indoors, due to weather and I like the idea of that stone top. I think it will hold up better if a hot pan gets set on it, plus I like how it looks. Will this cupboard I want to use be too heavy and will it be in the right place to make sure the load is balanced? On the other side of the trailer we will have our 10 ft tandem trike secured. It weighs about 60-70 pounds. We have a drop down bed that was installed and since the trailer is 7 ft high (towed with a T&C mini Van) I am more comfortable towing with the bed down. I don' t want the trailer to be top heavy. Suggestions and thoughts on this? I am not new to towing, but have previously towed a small camper or a cargo trailer with just the bike in it. I am nervous about getting the weight tribute on in our CTC right for balanced towing
Thanks.

If your cabinets are made of pressed wood, then with the top you have, it will probably be heavier then one you could make yourself. When I did mine, I added about 160 lbs of batteries on one side just in front of the axle. From there I tried to balance that out with weighed items on the other side, such as a counter high refrigerator and maybe two 5 gal, water containers and other stored items for when I am on the move. I did a kitchen remodel last year and reused the old heavy contertops in the trailer. The base material was an inch and half of particle board covered by laminate. They are heavy and maybe this year, I may replace them with DIY ones that are made of laminated foam sections to save weight.

So I think you are right to be aware of the weight of stationary items you add to the trailer. I am thinking I am suggesting that you make weight estimates for your added or planned items and try to balance the side to side and front to back (60/40 guideline) as best you can. I believe I do not get it right each time I tow the CT, and to date I have not had any handling issues.

Thanks. I think we solved our problem by purchasing an all in one kitchenette unit, Stove, fridge , sink and one cupboard, Alll in one pice and the weight is about 108 lbs. Should work well and it solved several problems in one shot. ight still look for a small cupboard to put next to it, if we feel we need it. The unit we purchased is 36 inches wide.
