7x12 V nose build

Postby noseoil » Thu Feb 02, 2023 9:46 am

My son just bought this trailer to help with moving, camping & hunting. He's planning on a side-by-side in the future, so this will be mostly a toy-hauler, but with minimal interior upgrades for camping & comfort. There won't be much space left over once the vehicle is parked inside, but there should be enough for a basic camp. I'll build a forward cabinet for the V nose area. He's going out again this year. It will be his 6th deployment (Army, E8, 1st sergeant in the infantry), this time into eastern Europe somewhere instead of the Middle East (5 tours, purple heart & Bronze star). It should give me plenty of time to get things right while he's overseas.

For now, we're planning on a solar setup with shore power for air conditioning, lights inside & outside, a radio & perhaps a "few" other things to make camping more comfortable than a tent & sleeping bag. I continue to receive more questions & photos, asking about "Hey dad, can we do this too?" So far it's looking like about $200 per picture in additions, extras & odds & ends.

It's early yet, the trailer is in Tennessee & we're in New Mexico, but it should arrive here in the next month or two. For now we're doing the planning & design stuff to make things work. Here's what we're starting with for the build.

I am looking forward to watching your build. Waiting months until you get the trailer will be tough!

Had a call from our son on Friday morning. At about 1:00 AM, while sleeping, my son woke up to a "crash" sound in the front of the house. Some drunken moron (a soldier, but not from his company) was going away from a DUI hit & run when he hit the new trailer. It's more of a time crunch than anything, as with this deployment my son will be heading out soon & this ends up being a large bump in the road for scheduling.

We're still not sure about the repairs, but it's another layer of time & work to make things happen, so he can leave in another month or two. I told him to ask for a "factory" repair from Spartan, as it's a new trailer which hasn't been used to haul. Have to see how it all works out, but will keep posting until I can start work on the conversion. It's a bit up in the air for now.

Fortunately, the insurance adjuster finally looked at my son's damaged trailer & came to the conclusion that the frame is bent. The damages add up to a "total" loss. They will be buying it out so he can find another to work on. This was a time crunch for him, leaving for Europe, moving, scheduling to get his 150 guys organized & packed, etc.

This ends the saga of the cargo conversion. It may begin again next year, when he's back from Europe but for now this is finished before it started...

noseoil, Howdy;

Sorry to hear of the 'accident', decent of the Insur. co. to do the total
and the buy out.

Hope the young man's deployment goes well, and he's still interested in
doing this project upon his return. Also, in what time off he may enjoy
during the deployment, he can evolve his planning for the interior and
maybe some components will come up with better upgrades.

Hi Hank, I'm glad this is going as well as possible. This will be the 6th time overseas (5 trips to the middle east, purple heart & bronze star) & we're praying there's no trouble where he ends up. With eastern Europe as dangerous as it is, I just hope he's back safely with all of his guys safe & sound.
