Converting Cargo Trailers into TTTs

Roof A/C

Postby travelman » Mon May 03, 2010 9:25 am

I converted a Wells Cargo 5x8 V-nose over the winter. I actually had so much fun doing it that I would like to build another one. It is listed on the for sale forum, but we have made three trips in it already and are really enjoying the freedom of having a simple lightweight camper. I built it to use, so that is what we plan to do until someone else wants it.
Now for my question. I am thinking about adding an air conditioner. I could go thru the back door with a window unit or maybe under the front bench kind of like a Casita, but the optimum solution is a roof unit. The ones I have found weigh about a hundred pounds. Does anyone know if the roof of this trailer will support that without any modification? I could call the factory but there seems to be enough knowledge on this sight to get the real info. I had the factory install the ceiling insulation and headliner, I would hate to have to remove it all to add support. Hiram

If the roof vent is framed out in steel then I'd say yes. Not sure if this is a standard feature with wells cargo or not.. I know on my Freedom the vent was full framed out with steel square tubing.

travelman....I looked at your photos. I really like your old trailer. It looks great! I am sure your new one will be just as good or better. Are your getting a larger trailer this time around?

Also, I spent around $1200.00 on AC for my new Wells Cargo Trailer. (Waiting on it to arrive in a few weeks) Probably spent too much on the AC.
I may have been able to get the AC installed aftermarket.

8ball...Your right. I learned that I over paid after reading this sight. The salesman told me how great this AC unit is ect. The AC unit is 13500 BTU with a 5600BTU heat strip. 8Ball..... You seem to know a lot about these trailers......Do you think the 5600BTU heat strip will work well? Whats your thoughts on 13500BTU AC??

travelman,

What a great Cargo Conversion!

A great straightforward design with
excellent execution. It's a perfect compromise
solution for comfortable basic camping in a
compact unit without being cramped for space
or function. You're onto something!

Thank you for the kind comments. I'm thinking that a 5x10 V-nose will give me the same living area but let me build a bigger galley, without that much increased drag. My wife and I didn't think we would really do a lot of cooking, but we are finding that not to be the case. And on a small trailer I wouldn't want to cook much inside. Too hot and messy! Has anyone put a roof unit on a Wells Cargo?
