CTC door window

Postby Itsdoable » Mon Jun 20, 2011 1:57 pm

I'm looking at putting a window in my CTC side door. Is there any concerns with the internal construction of a standard CT side door? From what I can guess it only has some wooden 1x2's inside? I'd like to avoid tearing the door apart to find out for sure.

If it's only wood, I can fab an interior wood frame to support the trim rings and hopefully maintain the door strength and stiffness.

I never took apart a CT door just a regular trailer not to much in one.
framing the door without seeing what's in the door you may cut something that's needed.
try it and see you can always peek inside after the hole is cut.

Itsdoable,
Having recently (today) had to rebuild my CT door due to rot, I think I can help answer some of your questions. Different manufactures doors are probably built a little differently, but they should all be about the same. I have included a picture of my newly rebuilt door frame. There are a couple of places that you really should not cut. that would be the top and bottom hinge attachment cross members. The mid section could probably be cut into without a lot of problems, but the two hinge cross members are all that hold the door to the hinges. The thin plywood inner skin and outter aluminmu skin does not provide a lot of strength. A small window placed between the upper and mid cross members would be ok. I am considering a porthole type window for mine. For now, it will be reinstalled without a window. Anyway, I hope the picture helps answer your questions.
