Converting Cargo Trailers into TTTs

6x12s

Postby jjvw » Mon Apr 30, 2012 11:11 pm

First post but have been lurking for a while, got most of the ideas from here. In October 2011 we bought a Royal Cargo 6x12 to haul our motorcycle, adding windows and folding beds so we could camp in it on our trip to the Keys. Unfortunately on the way back from florida, we had a minor accident that started a fire that destroyed our car, bike and trailer with all are camping equipment. Thankfully, AAA flew us home to Michigan and were very nice to work with on the settlement. We were able to get a newer van and bike.
This time we chose a Look Trailer from Bristol, Indiana. Picking it up at the factory, saved us a lot of money and the drive took us past several RV Surplus stores were we bought windows, ceiling panels and mattresses at twenty percent of retail prices. Would you believe 22x42 windows for $20 ea!

Yep looks a bit melty. Just out of curiosity what caused the fire?

Having been in northern Ohio for the past 35 years I tend to forget that, so good reminder, don't park in tall dry grass :frightened:

jjvw, Howdy;

Glad everyone made it out ok.

While you were going about your scavenger hunt
for new parts did you happen to get the names, phone
numbers and email addresses of any of the parts suppliers ?????

Our 6x12 ct has worked out well for hauling our motorcycle along on our many camping trips but it has it's short comings.
We spent 6 weeks riding in the Texas Hill Country this past winter. We have a canopy for rain, but that does not help with 25 degree nites. A heater and electric blanket took care of the cold but the king sized bed doesn't leave room for 2 chairs. Good thing the campground had a heated rec room or we would have gone bonkers in that little box.
On our previous trips over 1000 miles, we usually drove straight thru, switching drivers at gas stops, so we didn't waste any of our two week vacation. But now that we are both retired and got more time, we want to stop overnight. It's either unload the bike to set up the beds or get a motel.
We are thinking of getting a 7x16 and putting the bed in the front. With bike in the rear we can still use the bed for quick layovers at rest stops or Walmart. When the bike is out there would be room for a couple lounge chairs and a table.
Problem is getting rid of the 6x12 and then converting the 7x16 . The 12 footer tows so well, and I not looking forward to building my third.
Anybody got any ideas for making the 6x12 work or must I build another?

Would you have room to do bunks on one side? They don't have to be your main "all the time" beds, just for when the bike is in there.

Another different thought. Do you have a ramp door? You could add a tent area to the ramp door and use it either for you or to back the bike out on. Most that have used their ramps for rooms or patios support the ramp with either jackstands or cables.

I have a 6 x 12 and use a bunk bed high enough to clear my bikes, from the ramp forward I just used e track on each side with 2x4 and plywood across in 2 pieces, one piece for a small bunk, another for a queen....enough room to crawl in when im on the road and want to pull over and not unload a bunch of stuff, Ive got a small ladder to access and if i dont use it for sleeping i store stuff on it so i can unload my trailer and keep stuff stored there when Im camping..just a thought...good luck

Not sure I follow how yours is set up. Do you have any pictures?

Does your bunk run across the trailer above the bikes? Is it a full Queen size or single twin?

Or do you have a regular Queen sized bed down low when the bikes are out, and a bunk that runs up one side when you have a bike in?

My bunk goes all the way across...i can do a single..or queen on top as i made the plywood in sections that can be exchanged with the lower...ill try and take a pic of the track, i think i had some in my pics, look at my profile and see if you can see where the tracks run...
I was going to do fold down bunks and actually made them out of steel..but they were to much of a hassle...
