Screen ideas for cargo ramp

Postby foamer01 » Mon Sep 16, 2013 3:03 pm

I was wondering about how you folks went about having a screen room attached to the ramp door. I like the idea not sure if you found it to be practical. Thoughts/Pictures.
Thanks,

Really depends on where you go camping and of course the weather also. I have a screen door for my 7 X 14 toyhauler that I purchased from Sportsmans guide. Had to make minor alterations but it works great and attaches pretty quick with velco. That said, most of the places I used to go were motorcycle rallys and the dust is awful at most of them. If you happen to go some where and not have to worry about dust and the temps are nice enough to not run the heat or the A/C then you might enjoy it. I looked on their site and don't see it offered anymore.

I am thinking more of a "bonus" room on top of the ramp door when in the down position. I thought I have noticed this idea before.

I don't have a ramp door, and have a screen like the one above, but you're looking for a rectangular "pop-up" type screen room you can put on, or over, the ramp. I've seen some on here, so a specific search might help. I used to have one that went over a picnic table to keep the bugs at bay. It was free standing, and set over the top. A smaller one would set on your ramp. More creative minds could build one that fits exactly over the ramp. Keep us posted on what you find. My "next" trailer will probably have a ramp.

I was planning on the Barn Door approach because I wanted the "chuckwagon" type of set up in the back. But I am curious what your thoughts are as to why you want a ramp for your next CT? Other then for vehicle loading.

I have seen several screen rooms on ramp doors on this site. Seems most were custom made by the owners or they had them custom made.

I "think" I'd like one for a clean (not muddy, not grassy,) place to cook, sit in a lawn chair, set up my solar shower (pup-up), or even an outside table. I just don't ever use the space behind my trailer now, and thought maybe with a ramp door, I could put up a screen house like the OP is asking about, or perhaps set up a canopy around it for a cool place to chill outside. The canopy could be screened in as well. Just additional outside space. I don't camp in developed campgrounds much, so it might come in handy.

I guess I'd like to have it to play around and see how to use the space.

Gonefishing,

I like your thoughts. I had similar ones but the Barn Doors won out. I may rethink this. I have a little time to switch as I have not ordered yet.
I would like to see me picture posts of this concept. I will search the forum for previous inputs.

It would certainly change the height calculations for shelves for the stove and all that stuff. One would start with a standing surface 16 - 19 inches higher right off with a ramp door set up.

And I should have posted that last year I met a hunter with a CT camper and he had built a slide out back unit. But unfortunately he appeared to not like strangers his camp site so I did not push the issue and ask to see how he did it. I just said thanks and backed out.

There you go! Looks like a good start. What does Foamer01 think? I'd want a zipper on the rear for entry from the outside.

Fantastic! This is what I am thinking about. Without having/wanting a side door I would need some way to enter the screen (something convenient) as I will be building a rear entrance just inside the ramp door. I like the idea of the corner supports verses the heavy chain method (my opinion only not offending other methods used). Two more questions: BC: What web site did this come from? Has anyone on this forum built something very similar? I don't mind engineering and building myself however no sense in reinventing the wheel if it is available.
Thanks,
Foamer

These are available on Ebay and I almost bought one.
I have a new toyhauler now and I may still buy one for that, I was going to buy a screen for that but this may be better.
What I did for my 7x16 was buy a canopy off ebay and was going to screen it in myself but I never got around to it.
I built this box that I haul my gas cans around in and it also will go under the rear drop down door to make a deck, I have not found the need to have it screened in yet but I think it would be fairly easy to add the screen if and when I need to.
