Converting Cargo Trailers into TTTs

8.5x 20 Cross Trailer conversion.

Postby monocog » Thu Jun 04, 2015 10:25 pm

Got a new 8.5 x 20 trailer this week, planning to do toyhauler with folding bunks, murphy or drop down queen bed, ability to sleep 5. Shore and 12 volt power. Plans are for either an out door kitchen with sink and 2 burner stove like pop up campers have, or make a pit box type mobile unit that has propane, grill, cook top and sink that we can roll out of the trailer. I would rather not have cooking smells inside trailer. Today picked up and installed 18 foot awning, some stabalizer jacks, 2 48 x 22 escape windows and 12 x 22 window for the door, also a rv latch. If stabalizer jacks are mounted to frame, I would only have about 7 inches ground clearance. The trailer does have 5000# d rings installed in 4 corners with 12 gauge plate with brake about 45 degrees for stiffness, wondering if that would be enough for jacks, would give me approx 10 inches ground clearance.

Thanks, so plans are for monday, hopefully install windows and door latch. Looking at the electrical portion of tnttt. I think I will go with a pd4045 electrical unit. Do I need any other inverter, converter, charger in addition to? Will most likely have a tv, dvd player, microwave, ac, radio, a couple more led lights inside, one outside and vent fan, waterpump.

Nope! The pd4045 is all you need. It provides 12v and 110ac.

I agree that the PD4045 gives you 12V and 120 AC. But you have to be connected to a shore power for that to be. If on 12V only, then the PD4045 will not give you 120AC. You need an inverter in place for that to happen.

so far today, I got the rv latch installed, had to cut more out of back of door than I would have liked. Outside installation I am happy with.132721132722132723132724

Question, on a typical factory built travel trailer, are you able to use 120v items such as watch a tv, or use a coffee maker off of battery power?

No, most factory built RVs do not have an inverter.

Short answer ... No. Now if you have an inverter you can or if you have a dual source tv ( both A/C & D/C), you can.
Not aware of dual power coffee pots, but there are sure to be some out there somewhere. I use a stove top percolator
when camping or the power goes out. (I full time in an RV). Sometimes I perc a pot just to enjoy the aroma.

Thanks Hank,
If it were up to me I would use percolator, cook over an open fire and sleep in a hammock, the wife no longer likes to backpack, Kids are into anything but the outdoors. Teardrop was too small for everyone, so here we are. I'll go with pd4045, a couple deep cycle for radio and such, and maybe a generator. Made some progress today, installed 2 windows curbside, I measured 4 times, but still ran into am issue, ended up dead center in 1 x 2 stud. Welded in 1x2 .120 wall tube for upper header, and .120 1x1 for under window, ended up installing windows with pop rivets. In door used 3/4 aluminum tube, screwed and riveted toget her to replace some of the structure cut out from door. The large window, some of the rivets did not seat well, have to wait for local supplier to get correct ones in to replace, hopefully once the butyl tape is on for a bit it'll seat better. Had anyone used a sealant around windows in addition to butyl? Pics to follow.
