Converting Cargo Trailers into TTTs

Postby Wolfscout » Sun Dec 25, 2011 1:19 pm

well, we're still undecided on a total paint job on the exterior.
I don't know what the previous owner used for that log cabin look but in spots it's flaking off.
I considered pressure washing it to see if it will all come off back down to the original siding. we'll see.

I have updated some of the gear for the camper. bought a couple lights to mount outside for at night. clamp on flood lights that I can rig up on my roof top carrier.
also looking at putting in a drop down gray water tank underneath the camper and installing a tank similar to a lawn tractor mount sprayer with 12v pump for shower and other purposes. saw one in another thread here somewhere's forgot who had it.

re-posted from Don's thread to keep my ideas together:

yeah I don't think I'd go back to not having that sink available. :)
I've been thinking about a wall cabinet over my "galley" as well. I can' t go full width cause the microwave and toaster oven stack go too high. And I like my free counter top space. so... I'll need a cabinet custom built to go on the right side and take down that wire shelf I have there now to put stuff on while camping. I've also been considering one of those glass top electrical stoves mounted into my top. Reason is.. we been thinking about longer term camp trips of weeks not just a week or long weekend. Those tops are pricey but would really be nice to have.
Something along the lines of this:

or maybe this sit on top version single burner

I have a 2 burner "hot plate" that I used couple times when camping.
I also have a propane grill, and a old coleman white gas grill.
I also carry a microwave.
If and when I get my cargo trailer I will install the hot plate the microwave, and the propane grill
the grill is one that hangs on the side of the trailer.
the stove top you mentioned seems kind of pricey
the single induction one is interesting I've never used one before.

we recently installed one of those glass top ranges in our kitchen.. they are so nice I was thinking one in the camper would be nice. The table top model of one burner... for me isn't enough. I'd like two burners cause sometimes you don't want to cook just one thing of a meal at a time LOL

I'm definitely going to have to paint the trailer. The previous owners paint job draws too much attention when we're camping last weekend. with people wanting to stop and ask questions interrupting our " good times". Have to get it done before our trip to Edisto Beach end of April.

I added a wall mount exhaust fan today.

It wasn't too difficult but I need to build up the inside frame or rework it later. I'll get an inside shot of it later.

Well I've started painting my camper....
This is after a complete white primer coat and first coating of flat white.

This is street side.

There's some more touching up and some cleaning of the reflectors and such to do.
I'm liking it.
Big change sure to keep so many from asking questions when we go camping now.

Wolfscout,
How's your roof paint holding up? Can you remind me of the product you used?
thanks,

I used Henry 287 White roof coating. http://www.homedepot.com/Building-Materials-Roofing-Gutters-Roofing-Roof-Coatings/h_d1/N-5yc1vZapzz/R-100048006/h_d2/ProductDisplay?langId=-1&storeId=10051&catalogId=10053 -- it gave me roughly three coats on my roof.
I think it's doing well. It really changed the inside temperature nicely. I"m hoping the white exterior also helps improve that factor with the insulation I added previously.

Interesting to see the wall mount exhaust fan mounted at the top of
wall at the roof junction. I've been wondering if that'd be a good
alternative to the centrally mounted roof fan. I like the idea of
no "hole" in the roof. I could see mounting one on each side at
sort of opposite 'ends' of the body helping cross-ventilation as
a possibility.

The original paint job was interesting, but I'm a fan of white as
an exterior color on vehicles, especially in sun-intensive climes,
[can we all say "South Carolina"?] or at least a light color [but white
IS the most heat reflective].

Good to see your mods are making it your own and responsive
to your camping needs - that's the whole point isn't it?

Cheers,
Norm/mezmo

As you know being in SC has it's own heat issues.
I couldn't get the idea of a roof mounted ventilation to work because I often carry things on top of my camper.. boats, canoes, ladders, cargo racks...... So the roof fan would have gotten in my way.
So far the wall exhaust fan has been sufficent since it's installation.

are you planning on adding any decals or paint strips?
I kind of like the idea of a ct that looks like a toy hauler with it's strips and decals
maybe people wouldn't be so incline to stare
either way striped or not you have a nice looking trailer.

Did you use that roofing coating only on roof or the whole trailer I was going to have my trailer sprayed roof only with rhino coat {adding color to get white}. A friend said he could do it for $100.00. It would add to life and insolation of trailer. I too am going with the side vent fans 2of them 1 on each side. going with e-track rails on side for bed 5ft pieces on side of walls at 30'' up and a 2ft piece about 12'' down from ceiling so I put the bed up there when I need to load stuff big. I'm going to cut my mattress so it can be a couch when needed. You keep up the great work i'm following you build.
