Converting Cargo Trailers into TTTs

Postby 8ball_99 » Thu Jun 30, 2011 12:21 am

lol Thanks, Wouldn't say a pro, But this is my second trailer! I built a 6x14 last year. It was pretty much just a bed and bathroom. Worked pretty good and was a breeze to pull. We came to the point though where we needed a second machine to take four wheeling. So the small trailer just wasn't big enough. I also wished I had made spots for a microwave and a furnace in the first trailer.. I have to say after camping in this trailer a couple of times. I LOVE having the few extra's. I just got back from a 3 day trip this past weekend. The trailer worked great and so far I haven't really came across anything I wish I'd done different. I do still need to add a piece of PVC under the trailer to carry my sewer hose. That is one thing I missed

Spare mount design

Postby 72FJ40 » Thu Jun 30, 2011 11:13 pm

Excellent build; a great plan and professional quality construction. I really like your spare tire mount. The design in first picture is a bit different in shape than the finished, ready to install item. I thought I had the attachment to trailer figured out from first picture. How did you attach the mount to the trailer?

The couch/bed setup I bought online from a company called Blazintech. Very happy with the setup and although it was a little expensive it works great. It would have been pretty hard to build it from scratch

Thanks, The spare mount is the same. The only difference is I made the arm shorter. Once I mounted the tire to the bracket and held it all in place I realized I could lower the tire several inches. Main reason for that was it got the tire down lower so it didn't block my vision from my side mirror. It also just looks better. The bracket is pretty simple. Its a piece of 3/16" flat bar 4" wide that I drilled holes to match the rim. I then have a pice of 1 1/2" 14 gauge tubing cut on a 45 on both ends welded to the flat bar. I made sure the piece with the 45s was just a bit longer then the width of the tire. Once you have that the other part of the bracket is just two pieces of tubing in the shape of an L. I took a couple pieces of 1 1/2" angle iron and drilled and bolted it to the lower part of the spare tire mount. Held the mount up to the trailer and welded the Angle iron to the frame of the trailer. I did this so I can remove the entire spare mount just by removing the bolts under the trailer.. So for some reason I didn't want the mount there any more or wanted to change it I could with out having to cut welds.

Hey now. I did manage to fit a 3 way fridge, 6 gallon hot water heater, gas furnace, shower, toilet, sink, stove top, radio, closet, microwave and storage space all in a area of about 5x7! The other 19x7 is just used for two beds and a TV.

I'm finding out just how hard it is to pack it all in a Camper. and Your bed and TV area is larger than my whole trailer. Well I don't have anything that would pull one of that size anyway.. so back to the drawing board on this one.

spare mount

Postby 72FJ40 » Fri Jul 01, 2011 1:48 pm

Thanks for information on the tire mount; all those details help a lot. I was looking under my cargo ( 10' Wells Cargo ) this morning; there is a cross brace in just the right place to attach a mount. I have used the crank type under frame mount on the utility and car hauler; but this will work nicely on the cargo.

Thanks again for the description and details.

How much clearance do you have between the water tanks and the ground?
