Where to "hide" the spare?

Converting Cargo Trailers into TTTs

Postby roadinspector » Sat Jan 14, 2012 12:21 am

Wolfscout, I am planning on either putting that on mine or something simular when I finally get my CT. This forum has been a wealth of information for lots of brainstorming.
Dadgum it! I cut that board 5 times and it's still too short!

You know I have not given the spare tire much thought yet. I have been so focused on the inside stuff, that the spare tire has gone unnoticed. I don't even have a spare tire right now. Gee....something else to buy...ugh.

With the big V nose trailers there is not much tongue left for any type of storage locker or spare tire. There is not even any room for a battery box or an LP tank.

Gadget Man:

Any thoughts on mounting the spare tire on the lower rear exterior of the trailer tucked in behind the fender (if there is enough room)? I would think that the spare would not look or be physically obtrusive in that location.

Will the spare fit vertically between the tongue jack and tip of the vee? If so, you may get away with the cheapest spare tire mount in the world by putting a stainless U-bolt around the lower part of the jack and through the rim.....

I saw someone mount a spare just up and behind the rear fender; it looked good and out of the way and somewhat being buffered from airodynamice due to the fender being there anyway ...

my 2 cents

Not sure if I would mount a tire under the front A frame as it does not look like there is a lot of ground clearance to begin with?

Mount it below that frame and you're going to be dragging it every time you hit a speed bump or some rough campground road.
I'd go with mounting it on the road side behind the fender. I plan to mount mine in such a way it won't interfere with a sink I already mount on that side rear once on site. :)
