Converting Cargo Trailers into TTTs

Re: new guy in Texas

Postby DTCOOPER » Mon Aug 27, 2012 9:28 am

we are trying to make it camp-able by the 6th-7th of September.. It'll be pretty basic by then. Pretty much a glorified tent (with air conditioning), to haul the Harleys to Hot Springs Arkansas for the Motorcycle Rally... We'll jsut throw some air matresses on the floor, and sleep that way..
Then my donor camper will be here in mid-Spetember, and the true conversion will start..
This week I plan to finish insulating, then install the door latch (RV style).. Install one AC this weekend, then put in the floor chocks.. I'm still trying to devise a quick mount system for the chocks.. Maybe weld plates between frame rails in floor, then weld some nuts under those plates. To allow bolting them in from inside, and removing them when we arrive at our destination.. :NC

Depending on what type of chock your hunting for, there are some removable ones on Amazon from about $30 to $60.

One thing I forgot to mention.. The Big Blue store had some nice indoor/outdoor carpet in 15' width.. It was about 65 cents per square foot.. My thinking is lay that in trailer 15' front to back, then add a piece of vinyl floor, for the back "garage area".. More pics to come tonight

DT,

Your CT conversion is looking great! You have more room in that than the first place I lived in after high school. The two A/C units are probably a necessity here in Texas even with the tree cover in your area. (I worked in east Texas in the summer of 1980.) Keep the progress and pictures coming!

Take care,
Tom

Well tonight I truly finished the insulation. I got the back ramp door done as well. I'd show a pic of it, but you wouldn't be able to tell a difference. :D :R

well last night was spent working on the shredder on the tractor.. I had to get it repaired, to get the back acreage mowed, to then get it disked, to plant food plots for the upcoming deer season..
I took some pics of my welding and fab work but didn't get to upload them.. Oh well, this ain't a tractor forum anyway..
This weekend, we plan to get the plywood on the walls, followed by paneling on the walls and the ceiling.. And the all important AC installed ! :applause:

I'm pondering the shower set up.. I want a viable shower in the CT without taking up too much floor space.. I'm working on a drawing of our "Designed" layout.. I'll put it up for consideration and input later today.

great start. so you haul motorcycles?? do you go to the harvest classic in lukenbach in october?? that rally is the first place i took my CT for a shake down. i have an 8x14 and it does a good job for me and my wife.
a good place to stay is the ARMADILLO campground 1/4 mile from the rally. clean facilities, 30 amp, and less noise.

Went to Luchenbach in June for the first time.. That was cool.. I haven't heard anything on the rally in October.. But now that you've mentioned it, I'll definitely have to look into it.

Well, I've just about met my goal.. We got the AC installed... :applause: It made it pleasant to work inside.. Even with having the walk door open and closed the whole time while installing paneling, it kept it comfortable in there. It was 94 Saturday, and it kept it near 80 with door opening constantly. Once we closed it up, it was at 73 very quickly..
Paneling turned out nice..

I got the door latch installed too. Had to add some 1/4" diamond plate inside and outside to take up the space the latch needs to fit correctly.

When we return from this trip, I'll get the other camper.. I don't know what I'll be able to use from it, except for another roof AC, water tanks, stove, and sinks.. And propane tanks, regulator, etc.
We are wanting to add some windows as well. I think I have a line on some of those !! :worship: We shall see. My progress is actually coming along a bit faster (At this time) than I thought it would..

Laid some carpet down in the front 2/3 of the trailer, got the chocks installed (welded plates underneath between frame rails, then welded nuts on under side, to allow quickly removing them from inside, using my cordless impact..

Trip to Arkansas this weekend was awesome.. Cool weather, stayed at Daisy State Park.. Arkansas has their State Park acts together.. Some of the nicest I've ever seen ! :applause:

Here's a pic of the bikes loaded..
Image

Was raining when we got there Friday night, so the bikes had to stay inside with us for the evening..
Was pretty cool to wake up to this Saturday morning.

Got a few ideas from this shake down trip, as to what other things we want to do to the trailer to make it "our own"..

Being a fellow biker and once upon a time Arkansan, I can say that they have some of the best places to ride there in the Ozarks.

I agree with semihippie, the Ozarks are really nice and so are the Ouachita Mountains.
