Deep cycle battery location

I thought I needed an AGM battery but the guy at my local batteries plus said that this one is sealed and would be fine for putting in my living space. Is he on point or clueless? I'm definitely clueless

I would think that the filler caps on top of the battery you linked to would be a serious clue that that battery isn't sealed. I'm not sure as I haven't inspected any sealed batteries but I doubt they'd have filler caps on em. Just a thought from a drug addled brain.

I will second Gus I have not seen a sealed battery with caps. I would say this is a marine battery note cold cranking amps and not a true deep cycle. Batteries plus is very clear when a battery is AGM and or sealed so this is not.

As someone else said I located both my batteries under the floor right in front of the axle..works great...
saves space...

I talked to a different guy last night who seemed very knowledgable. He suggested this battery

He said it is better suited for my needs. This stuff is just too confusing for me.

Which is more important to you, a long lasting true deep cycle battery, or having your battery inside?

The battery you show is sealed and will work inside, but it isn't a true deep cycle battery and won't last with cycling.


If it was me and I really wanted it inside, I would get a good sealed battery box that can be vented to the outside via a tube. I would then get a good big real deep cycle battery to put in it..

Sealed and deep cycle are not mutually exclusive. My Interstate deep-cycle battery is a sealed AGM type that does not need venting and can be installed anywhere. It was however about twice the price of those batteries shown above, for fewer Ah.

Actually, VW's were famous for lighting the rear seat on fire. There is a little plastic cap over the positive terminal that some didn't replace when servicing the battery, and when a person of "large stature" sat down, the seat springs shorted out the terminal. I can still remember the smell of burning horsehair!

Yup but it had nothing to do with a build up of hydrogen. Although I've see a few of them "sparks is sparks" I've never heard of a car burning up over it. Now what got my attention and I'm sure has caused a number of VW fires was the spark jumping from old spark plug wires to the fuel line from the fuel pump to the carburetor. THAT was scary.

We drove a 59 bug from 1965-1975 and a 70 Fastback from 1974-1978. Drove the bug all over Texas then round trips to: 2 to Northern Colorado, North Dakota, Kansas City and 2 to New Jersey. We never had a battery problem of any kind. If you did things right, they were the most reliable vehicle around. EPA killed another good vehicle.
