I got a quote to replace my 3,500lb drop axles with 5,000lb staight axles for $500 per axle plus labor. For $1,240 I can basically have the increased ground clearance ( and axle clearance for poor forest roads) and a more robust platform with a 10,000lb GVW instead of 7,000lb. The trailer fully loaded for action with cruiser on board and 66 gallons of fresh water is apprx. 6,000 to 6,300 lbs. and less with the dirtbike instead of cruiser.

Do you think it is worth the price to upgrade to have the weight margin as well as better axle clearance?

Thoughts? I plan to get the heaviest ply tires I can fit under there in any case when time to replace. Probably can get a few hundred $ for the old axles with brakes on Craigslist?

flboy, I enjoy seeing the refinements you're making to your trailer. Thanks for continuing to share!!

Edit. I ordered mine with torsion #5000 axles straight from the factory. I definitely wanted the higher weight rating and it rides like silk.

flboy, Howdy;

Are you going to ask the Manufacturer of the trailer for an updated VIN
sticker? Without the change your insurance and anytime an inspection
occurs if you show above the VIN's weight rating you can and will be
liable for any accident or other action (tickets/fines), by law enforcement.
Just something to consider or ask your insurance person about.

Hank, is there a problem if I increase the weight rating and in fact am not exceeding the factory weight rating as built and labeled?

Not as long as you stay AT or Below the Manufacturer's stated Maximum gross weight
for that trailer. Should be listed on the VIN sticker.

We have the tandem 5000 lb axles under our 8.5 X 18 and we like it. My cousin who sold and built trailers for years told me to definitely go with the 5000 lb as it would give you larger brakes and go with radial 8 or 10 ply tires. We have the 8 ply and had no problems except a nail in the tire in 14000 miles this last summer.

Thanks Richard! I am most likely going to upgrade. Sooner or later I will stop building this toy hauler and call it done. :NC :NC

Added some convection cooling to my electric cabinet. The inverter and converter are housed in there on top shelves and when running, I noticed a heat build up towards the top. The cooling fans come on within the equipment, but no fresh draw or exhaust. This should do it. Holes to breathe up top and likewise , some fresh air to draw from below.

flboy, Howdy;

I'm surprised you hadn't done that "mod" earlier. I have an Oxygen concentrator that runs all the time
and that thing (by-itself), puts out alot of warm air. Had thought about asking how you ventilated that
space a few times in the past but figured you had it all rigged for that. Oh, well gotta keep that air
circulating ... :applause: , :thumbsup: , :thumbsup: ! Lookin' Good!

Hi Hank. Yes, I should have done this mod a long time ago. Previously when camping and running a load, I'd just leave the door ajar a bit. This is just one of those small details I never got around to until now. Just running out of things to do to it now. :-)

I hope all is well with you. Take care.

Nice. But your mean too. Winter blahs here, and it's still November. After not riding for a month I got my bikes out Sunday. Snow had melted Friday & Saturday. Was 34°, just played in my yard. But felt good!
Enjoy yourself!
