Is hydrogen sulphate lighter than air? :thinking:

In my opinion it is best to allow air to come in at the bottom and any hydrogen that escapes from the batteries to passively find its way out the top vent. It escapes quickly on its own because it is so much lighter than air.

If you think you really need the fan, then use it to push the bottom air in. In the bottom it is not exposed to direct contact with the hydrogen.

This motor is an induction motor (shaded pole type I believe) and does not have any brushes or etc. that spark. It should not be a problem for that. The cabinet is very well ventilated in any case and the fan comes on with the charger so there really should never be any concentration of Hydrogen in this case.

Hydrogen sulphate ( I think it is sulphide?) is heavier than air and may travel along the ground. That is the rotten egg smell and very corrosive and flammable. A potential problem in a confined area with no ventilation.

No, about the same, just dissipates.

Long as you don't seal the battery box up, I find just open walls to the well-ventilated living space is NP for safety.

Unless someone is hypersensitive to the smell, then just a passive vent to the outside is plenty.

Indeed, it is hydrogen sulphide. :oops:

flboy, Howdy;

Here's an article I found, written by a Fire dept. about Golf Cart batteries.
Oh, and they are from Fl. A bit long but very informative.

Thanks Hank. I can believe it. Ventilation is very important. These new houses are so air tight for energy efficiency.. nothing gets out. Also.. those fast charging golf cart chargers tend to boil batteries. A perfect storm in a closed up garage setting.

BTW... Merry Christmas!

I hope everyone had a great Christmas and are looking towards a great 2019. I know I am. I do not deserve the blessings I have.

Kids and grandkids all left for home, and my wife has to work a few days straight so I packed up the CTC and headed for the ONF. Camping for a few days.

Below is a screenshot on my phone. The Surecall Cell Phone Booster is working great. Full bars inside with barely one outside. Good enough to stream a movie tonight.

I am testing out the new battery bank
I will post how ot goes if anyone cares. Will be a good/practical test

Loaded up in the back yard
Beautiful weather!

Envious!
I may work on my bike, woodsplitter or TAZ. Weather is sucky November was cold. December can't decide, warm/cold yo-yo. We had a white Christmas with 3 inches. But warm up and rain with high winds is forecasted . Never gets warm or dry enough to get the bikes out. Been a month.

flboy, Howdy;

Glad to hear you and yours had a good Christmas.

Have a good camp out and expect a full report about the new battery system.

Stay safe, have a good time.

I look forward to hearing about how your batteries and charge controller are working ... and your new Victron monitor.
