The Great Olympus Camera Crash

Postby d30gaijin » Mon Feb 21, 2011 11:27 pm

Made a day trip to the Sandy Point Park at the base of the dam that forms Lucky Peak Lake, about a 5 minute drive from our house in Boise, Idaho.

Arrived to find the gates closed and locked. Not really a problem if we can't drive in because it's OK to walk in but we had to park a quarter mile away. So we load up for our hike in with two wooden Berlebach tripods, one holding our heavy Pentax APO telescope that we use as a spotting scope and the other my Olympus EPL1 camera and Panasonic 100-300 telephoto lens attached.

I was carrying the camera tripod and Christi said she'd carry the telescope tripod, which is much heavier. We were again searching for the Pigmy Owl that was reported to be in the area. We searched for it back on the 12th of February but could not find it then nor yesterday, but we did spot and shoot a few other birds we had not seen before, meaning that Christi could cross them off her list of birds to spot.

It started to get cold and blustery so we decided to pack it in after two hours of hiking and head for REI, the backpacking outfitters store to buy some new windstopper gloves (our gloves sucked). So we started hiking back to the Jeep and Christi said, "This scope and tripod are way heavy could you carry it and I'll carry the camera and tripod." So we swapped what we were carrying and continued our hike back to the Jeep. As we approached the closed gate we couldn't drive through and were walking around it I spotted 9 large birds (eventually identified as simple ass crows) circling over head. I had already passed around the gate but Christi was still negotiating the passage around the gate when I shouted, "Look up there!" pointing to the circling birds. Dumb move on my part. She looked up while still walking and tripped over the concrete gate post base and took a tumble. She, the camera, and tripod hit the ground, the impact of which tore the camera tripod socket (the threaded fitting where the tripod screws into the camera) right out of the Olympus EPL1 camera body and put a huge gouge in my Berlebach wooden German made tripod.

Thankfully Christi was not seriously hurt, at our age (even though the wife is five years younger than me) falls can be seriously detrimental to our health. The lens wasn't damaged, thankfully, but the camera can never be mounted on a tripod again, but it does still work just fine for hand held shots.

Christi felt really bad because she likes the photos the EPL1 takes so she told me to order a new one, which I did last night from B&H Photo after some on-line searching.

BTW, other than a bit of cropping this is a straight out of the camera jpeg shot, absolutely no post processing whatsoever was done. It could easily be enhanced but I didn't feel the need to do so at this point.

GPW,

The weather here is changing to something approaching spring as I hope it is for you. We are antsy to get back into the CT build come decent weather. We are already planning for camping trips in the CT as soon as the weather breaks. I have several mods and improvements to make to it. The water heater is coming out since we found it is not needed and only adds extra weight. A Surflow on demand 12v water pump (I have already bought) will be installed. I have some finish work to do on the interior paneling, some caulking, forward (galley) cabinet work to complete. Upon doing that we should be ready to go... but then again even without that we are good to go since we did last year without that. I reckon the main thing is... well we need to get on the road with what we have.

My next post will be back to focusing on our CT build and the progress we plan to make... and some info on our CT trips.

GPW,

Whoa! That is not good. Rot comes from water, any idea where the water is coming from? Leaking pipes? Poorly sealed under floor letting rain water in as you traveled? Not good at all!

GPW,

So much for the arrival of spring. It snowed last night and I had to make my way to work through the stuff. Thank goodness for the 4x4 Jeep Cherokee.
:snowstorm:
It's Supposed to drop to 17 degrees tonight with a high in the low 30's tomorrow, but I bet it will be colder on both the high and low prediction since the local weather idiots seems to be always off from what we actually experience here in the real world. I'm guessing a low of 12 degrees based on living here in Boise for the past 30 years and what I feel when I went outside tonight i.e., it's going to be cold tonight!

Crystal Ball Weather Prediction

Postby Engineer Guy » Sat Feb 26, 2011 12:12 am

Not a bad night low temp guess, Senor!

On the lower left of this Webpage, see historical Weather info. Great for trip planning. Especially with areas around Airports, which generate spot-on data long term - the info is right on. Personal Weather Stations supply other info.

Boise Weather

Unfortunately, there's no equivalent prediction of when the Yellowstone Caldera - which 'burped' recently - is gonna blow us all to Kingdom Come, Krakatoa-style.

SNOW !!!! Again ? :o Haven't you guys had your share of that for this year ??? I was just looking at the buds forming on the trees ... Definitely Spring here, and most welcome... Mid 70's here, so I'm in the trailers working ...
Don , met a guy (works for an RV shop) who gave me some great advice to fix the J myself... got the procedure all sorted ... fix the leak , fix the floor ... looks easy the way he put it...
One thing he recommended was to keep the TT covered... :o Even if it was just a tarp .. He said that there was just too many places a commercial TT could leak and cause problems ... Wish my dealer had told me this .... quite the contrary , he told me it would be fine outside .... guess the dealer was just drumming up some future repair business... grrrrr!!!!
So, keep an eye on your J TT ... avoid the trouble I had ...

 The plan is still to get a bigger CT to convert ...

EG, wondering if Cargo Trailers are ash-proof ...

EG,

I was closer to correct than the local weather monkeys. They said 17 degrees and I said 12. It was 11 degrees at my place when I got up this morning. :o

I've kind of been watching that Yellowstone thing. We're all toast at some point. :worship:

GPW,

Since our Jayco has a small split in the roof I need to repair with Eternabond (or whatever it's called) we stored it for the winter at a rented covered storage place. But that's good to know about keeping it covered.

The RV outfit we bought our Jayco from went out of business as of last December 31st. :x So much for warranty work. For small things that's probably just as well as it saves me from hauling the Jayco around for minor stuff I can probably better fix myself.

Don, the RV man said most all problems start with the roof ... Gotta' mend that tear ... Got me checking mine too ... Today I'm going out for a tarp ...
He also said the sun plays heck with the caulk ... expanding and contracting , eventually splits/cracks ... I asked him about my Eternabond tape , he said it was great stuff , but I had to remove every bit of caulk first ... Too expensive for a dealer to do (his words) ... told him I was retired and had plenty of time for just this sorta stuff .... another Spring project ...

And around here , Spring only lasts a few weeks till it starts to get HOT ... Gotta' get Busy !!! Our Intense heat is like your snow... I'd rather stay inside...

Lucky your dealer flew the coup.... Now you can DIY !!! Lots Cheaper too !!! :o

Root Solution - Better Living Through Roof Repair

Postby Engineer Guy » Sat Feb 26, 2011 8:34 pm

A fellow in another Forum was keen on 'Henry' Roofing Products for RV Roof repair. I checked them out at Home Depot and spoke to the Henry Factory re: surface prep. Both products are carried at Depot for ~$25-/Gal., but a pal and I won't get around to this project for a month or so. We'll do both our TTs w/whatever products we decide on. The Henry Rep mentioned a 10 yr. Warranty on their products. I plan to do the Roof and the upper Roof/Sidewall Trim pieces.

If I get independent info that the 1 or 2 Brands used on RV Roofs at ~$75-/Gal. are the better way to go, I've no problem using them. I do know that Henry Roof Products have been used on stationary Modulars forever.

A Roof corner seam leak has caused some very slight Shower corner damage, but I knew that in advance. After the Roof repair, I'll glue in some thin, PVC Wall Liner @ ~$18-/sheet and redo the Shower Walls once and forever.

Today, I replaced the hidden bottom of the Door frame with a piece of scrap Delrin. The bottom Wood piece had rotted out, so all this goes with Trailer territory, I guess.

EG,

Can you provide a bit more info on the Henry roof repair stuff? Is it like a coating that is applied to the entire roof to seal it? I have a 2" split in my Jayco rubber roof that needs repair. I'm thinking I need some sort of bonding agent to seal it, or a tape like Eternabond to seal it (have no idea what Eternabond is or exactly how it works but from the descriptions I've seen here on the CT forums it appears it should work for my needs). Is the Henry stuff something I would apply AFTER sealing the split with the Eternabond tape?
