Don & Christi's 6 x 10 Cargo Conversion

Converting Cargo Trailers into TTTs

Postby GPW » Sun Feb 27, 2011 7:25 am

Don , as it was explained to us , the RV Eternabond tape , UV protected, doesn't need Anything over it ... It's VERY Sticky!!! You just need to clean the area thoroughly (acetone or the cleaner they sell) and just stick it down ... Done deal !!! I bought mine from an old guy at a sheet metal/ roofing supply ... He had used it before on commercial jobs , and recommended it ... I bought two rolls of the 4" (100USD for both) ... one to do the Jayco, one for "just in case" ...
Should I ever need to replace the covering on the roof (paper thin vinyl ) I might go with EGs suggestion and roll on something like those roof coatings , which would have been MUCH better than the factory junk...

The plan is still to get a larger CT to convert ... They seem to do so well living outside ... unlike the RV offerings ...

Roof Coating ~ Prelim Info

Postby Engineer Guy » Sun Feb 27, 2011 7:00 pm

Did some Henry Co. Roof Coating recon today at Home Depot, based in part on a RV recommendation online.

See below the White Roof Coating family of Products, and the Henry Co. Website linked below that. Lots of info to absorb. Recommendations are to lay down 2 Coats. Besides that well-known effect whereby anything related to 'RV' instantly costs more [like Roof Coatings], I also figure that this Roof repair 'stuff' has all been done before. Ain't no Wheels being reinvented here, by me at least...

Product 587 is an Elastomeric coating sold in .9 Gallon Cans for $27.35 here. Product 289 is the associated Sealant. Product 296 is the 'Elasto Tape' Product used for voids, not unlike Drywall Joint 'mesh'. Product 224 is the Window/Door Sealant.

Product 204 Coating can also be used. Products have different drying times. Instructions on the Can give lots of info, including that above. The Henry Rep thought a 7 year life was reasonable for RV Applications. Product 587 can be applied over 'well adhered' Paint.

I don't know if Eternabond Tape is compatible or not.

I recall my Grandpa rolling some Aluminized Roofing 'stuff' on his Single Wide in the '60s, and there's something like that color of material on my 31' Avion installed by the prior Owner. No leaks.

My pal and I, doing 15' TT Roofs 'simultaneously' next month, will likely split a large Can of their best Product and sweat the prep details to maximize our Roof lifespans and avoid further Rot damage.

Stuff sounds good to me thus far. So, the research and soliciting good/bad Testimonials will continue.

GPW,

Going from memory here but I think I saw Eternabond at Camping World via their web site. Once the weather warms a bit and we pull the Jayco out of storage I'll look into it. Before putting the Jayco in storage I washed the entire exterior, got up on the roof and scrubbed that to, which is how I found the split in the roof rubber. Once out of storage I'll clean the area around the spilt thoroughly and apply the Eternabond and keep an eye on it over the course of this coming camping season. I wouldn't be surprised if the Jayco roof split was that way when we bought it new. It was a 2008 model that we bought May of 2009 so it obviously had been sitting on the dealers lot for sometime out in the open.

After hearing your Jayco experiences I will be keeping a close watch on everything on top of our Jayco, as well as everything else.

EG,

Thank you for all the great information on the Henry's Roof Coatings. Let us know how it goes when/if you and your friend apply the coatings. TT roof are clearly of intreats to several of us here, not to mention I need to reseal the forward running lights on our CT that leaked water to the galley area when we were returning from our last CT outing in a rain storm.

John,

Welcome to T&TTT and especially to the CT Forum, eh...

Thank you for the kind compliments. I hope to get back to my build too in the next few weeks. I want to finish off the forward galley area then start looking into paneling for the front and side interior walls, insulate the upper corners and panel them too. The E-Track is good stuff from my perspective, well at least it is working out well for us. I still may add a couple of windows for the same reasons you want them but they are fairly low on the priority list at this time.

Follow GPW's advice and post pics to your album then cut and paste per GPW's instructions. We look forward to seeing your build progress here on the CT forum. If you need help posting please don't be afraid to ask. We're here to help each other in all respects.

Again, welcome aboard!

5x8 continental cargo

Postby John Tin » Thu Mar 17, 2011 8:52 pm

Shoot Don I wish I was'nt so daft on this computer!! Anyways I tried to upload some pics again and it said pics too large or corrupted,,I'm really not sure what you guys mean when you say cut and paste?? But the little trailer is all stripped out now,and I am so unsure if I want to cut holes in the trailer, for windows, or go with the stealth idea??I've thought about that inside rear wall idea,so when the back barn doors are open,I would have a window, and maybe a small door?and the option of adding a small a/c if I needed to?Anyways this forum is awesome and I have gotten so many ideas!!! Thank you John

JT, open your pics up on your desktop, in the bar above marked Tools , there's "Adjust size" .. try for around 600X800.. that'll fit .... I have to make all my pics smaller to fit here..

Don , I'm getting ready to scrape all that nasty caulk off my Jayco... replacing it all with eternabond ... Looks like I'll have to scaffold up for the job ....I don't trust my old self on a ladder... Hope it's not too hard to get off... Worry about damaging the rather thin TPO... :o I'll let you know how it goes ... maybe I can get some pics ...

John,

Start here: http://www.mikenchell.com/pichelp.html

That link tells you how to post a photo. As GPW said, you need to reduce your photo size to 800x600 or 480x680, I tend to the latter size to eliminate problems with photo sizes. To reduce your photo size you need access to a photo processing program. One of the best I have found as freeware is FastStone: http://www.faststone.org/FSViewerDetail.htm

That program works only on Windows based PC's. It is a great program and very intuitive. You can reduce your photo size via that program then upload them to your T&TTT album. From there you can follow GPW's instructions to cut and paste.

If you need additional help I think I can walk you through it. Feel free to Private Message me (PM me) if you need that additional help.

As an option feel free to send your photos to me and I will shrink their size and send them back to you so you can upload them to your Album. PM me for an email address to send your photos too.

We want to see pics of your CT build. We can do this my friend!

A New Direction

Postby d30gaijin » Fri Mar 25, 2011 7:57 pm

I will be retired as of April 29th 2011. Getting our 6x10 CT re-outfitted or finished inside is my first retirement project. I am looking forward to the time to do so. I will report progress here. I am also looking forward to the time off... oops, not time off, rather retired time to get away and get in some camping, bird watching, photography, shooting, and rebuilding a couple of Porsche 914's.

Stay tuned as the Don & Christi's 6x10 CT takes another directional rebuild/design change. :SG

Don once retired you will wonder how you ever got anything done when you were working.

the days seem shorter the projects just grow and everone wants your time.

I am always sad to see April 29th come around it is my mother's birthday.

I will have mixed feelings this year, good luck and may your retirement bring you nothing but fun days. :applause:

Pete,

I thank you for the well wishes on my retirement. I plan to make the most of it... as best I can.

I take it your Mother has passed and for that you have my sincere condolence. But then again, maybe in the future, you can think of April 29th as a day that another (me) was set free after 45 years of working (actually many more than 45 if one considers the years of jr. high school and high school jobs).

Life is a cycle. What passes comes back in another form (a new baby is born) and life moves on from there. It is important that we remember and honor those who have passed by passing on to future generations the knowledge we have been handed from previous generations.

Let us never forget.

God bless and keep your Mother in his love,

Don

My Dad's Passing

Postby d30gaijin » Sun Apr 10, 2011 1:07 pm

Sorry to have been away from the forum so long but my Dad passed away March 28. The wife and I have been at Lake Tahoe helping my Mother make arrangements, get her financial things in order, get her taxes done, and just providing support. He was actually my step-father but he raised me from 2 1/2 years old and I have always thought of him as my Dad. My parents were married for 58 years so they've been together for what seems like forever, and both were very active. As best the doctors can tell, without a full autopsy, is he died of a stroke while sleeping. Both my parents are 86 years old and Pop's led a good full life right up till the end. The day before they drove to Carson City to see friends, have lunch and do some gambling. 86 is a good long life but still it was a shock to all of us.
