Nice looking rig.
I like the ground clearance. I assume you used a straight axle.
Hope my someday will look that sharp.
Bob

Thank you very much.
I used a 3500 lb axle for the big brakes and air bags for the adjustability.
I lower the trailer when we get to camp.
Let me know if I can help you with any of your ideas.
Jeff

Thanks Jeff, I sure will not be afraid to ask questions when I start. But first let me ask this. I am traveling a considerable distance next month to look at some highly recommended CT models. I will not order right then on the spot. I will go away and think about what I saw.

But aren't all the axles being offered 3500lb units? And did you install the air bags yourself or where they a factory item? I like the idea of being able to lower the trailer. I too anticipate going off the beaten track (not exactly off road) and clearance will be an important factor to consider.

I see as many posts which infer that the builder is not getting brakes added on a single axle unit. What motivated you to go for them? And you mention the brake size as 10 inches. Is that important to know? In other words, are there brake size options to consider?

The axle size is sometimes predicated by the size of the trailer. The trailer I found had a 2500 lb drop axle without brakes. It also had short stiff leaf springs.
I removed the entire axle and suspension, put full length leaf springs and made my own air bag mounts. Shocks are a must. Brakes make a huge difference. 3500 lb axles come with 10" brakes. When I towed with my Tacoma, the trailer could almost stop the truck, Landcruiser...not so much!
I do some crazy backcountry camping with my trailer. If you tow off road, loosing the ball hitch is a must. I use a product called "Max Coupler" from Kilby Ent.
Hope this helps.
Jeff

Thanks,
I have never seen a hitch like that before. Watched a youtube video moments ago. Very interesting. But I do not think I will go that much off the road. Maybe gravel forest roads, that is all. Besides that, here in VA, almost all of the true offroads on Federal or State lands are barracked these days. And I am not fortunate enough to have access to that kind of private land.

But I will make sure that the trailer does have a 3500 axle and will seriously consider the brakes on it. Just this morning, my wife and I pushed our travels out for another month, so there is no way I will get a custom ordered trailer now in time for hunting season. I guess it is back to a tent this fall (or sleeping in my truck).

And if I end up getting a CC so it can be worked on in the winter, I will have to look into lowering it so as to be backed into a garage for the retrofitting. Fortunately I have seen what other forum members have done to lower the trailer for garage storage.

This is unless I see a trailer on the lot that I just cannot pass up. Time will tell.

I built it entirely myself to a quality much better than the mass produced toyhauler, it is the size I wanted with the amenities I wanted and without the ones I didn't. I built exactly what I wanted and needed and was unable to find anything else on the market that met my exact needs. For what I have invested in mine I could have bought a much larger toyhauler but that would also mean I would have to buy a bigger truck to pull it with.

Not me. Never been to California. I did have a client's soon to be ex-husband (divorce case) attack me in my office with a folding chair. It was the one day I didn't have a gun with me. (Not been any since) I removed the chair from his hands. Sat his ass down, then realized I didn't want him in my office, so, I threw him out the door. When he bumped me in court, I looked at the judge and said "what's with this crap?" The judge didn't say a word. The bailiffs got close, but nothing happened again.

I made it myself with functionality design. Being the cheap guy that I am, that too was a consideration. I don't much need or want fancy looks so I don't have to worry about what or how I do whatever I want inside. It's built to take it. And it works for us.

Flexibility and convenience and with little effort I can get away quickly.
If I want or need more room I put up the side tent, just a quick night put the front wheel down and camp is set.
Wake up in the morning with the urge to go camping give the husband a call at work to let him know grab some food and off I go.
And it has been down a few roads that my car was not built for but we haven't been stuck yet. :D

But flexibility has to be the best, its as much or as little as I want at any given time.
