horse trailer ramp hinges. Makes sense. Live stock up the ramp, no cable to mess them up. Same deal, different application. Common set up.

I got this one way or another Hate them cables

Tommy,

The pic I posted earlier was from a horse trailer. That type of torsion spring system is common. If you have a trailer place in near they probably have some trailers for landscaping that use them on the rear or side gate. They are simple a they and don't have to be done as elaborately as it was on the trailer in the pic. I'm sure they used used all of those tubes because it is aluminum and they were worried about wear. The system can be made with normal butt hinges using a grade 8 bolts as the pin. A single stainless pin that went though all of the hinges would probably work better. The springs are cheap but I have no idea how to calculate the tension or number needed. I am sure the spring company could help with that though.

Lippert makes all of the components https://www.lci1.com/support-ramp-doors

Lippert also makes a complete hinge called the infinite hinge that used torsion rods that is supposed to be customer friendly in setting the tension.

If you don't mind having garage door type springs this is another option http://www.batesontrailers.com/product/optiopns-for-van-trailers/spring-assisted-loading-ramp-replacing-roller-shutter-doors/

Hey ID, I called Lippert and they no longer make that infinite hinge. Bummer. I am looking like crazy and have one iron in the fire, waiting on a response. I found this formula. It may come in handy later. I called Hallmark and they are working on this for future cargo trailers so it must be good. Just not ready yet.
I'm on this like white on rice. May take a bit but I am determined.

Thanks big time ID!

I am having doubts as everyone on the phone is concerned with liability and all. Danger, Danger. Soon as they hear retro fit its good bye!

I don't want to forge ahead and this not work right being what is at stake. It works now and is safe anyway. That door is pretty big and heavy. I don't have the knowledge nor can I find local expertise to help in this. Plus I am solo.

There is a reason lippert stopped making that Infinite door hinge believe me. And also why Hallmark has yet to meet and I quote " industry standard " yet on this set up.

Unless someone local can help I'm done with this. :NC

You could just put a few pool noodle floaties on the cables when the door is down so ypu don't keep "clothes lining " your self.

Rig the ramp with a hand winch. Raise and lower like a drawbridge. This way you could just disconnect the cable/cables in the lower position.

Hows that one different from the cables? Are you just trying to get rid of the rollers and spring up top so the screen can go in front? There is another way to do that by enclosing the rollers and starting the screen just below. May have to duck slightly going in of your trailer is only 6' tall.

OK I GOT IT!

Jeeze, any material you want to use. Mesh. Clear plastic., or combo. It simply fits. Should have tested this prior.

Velcro sides, what ever. I will live with sloped ramp, and cables. level ramp fall/knee hazard.

This was quick, so again imagine nice green mesh per previous picture, $23.00. Some Velcro. Stretched taught. I will post pics when done.

I didn't really want the cables either! However I was told that in my climate the hinges would not be any good. I have a few ideas yes noodles are one but I haven't got to it yet.

Tommy, no need to Velcro the sides (although that will work fine t0o... just more work to do the screen and the trailer). It is a steel frame around that door. Just sew in magnets and that will hold it very well... then you put in a slit for the opening and then sew in light magnets either side (opposing polarity) slightly overlapped. It really is that simple. I plan on buying the screen at Home Depot and then cutting it myself. You can buy magnets to sew in on E-bay or Amazon...

Also, you should be able to get in front of the pulleys and springs so the screen is flush to the frame. Put small slit on either side (magnet or Velcro to attach) to allow the cable to pass through. I believe they sell these already made for various size Toy Haulers... but they cost about $150.00 and up. You should be able to make one for <$25.00

Lastly, make sure you seal the wood on your ramp well if is going to be open to weather. It will ruin that plywood real quick. If a level ramp is important to you.... just get some chains (attach with a carabiner) like shown in other places to keep the door level and take them off when you want a ramp.

Absolutely!
Just like that. I will try this mesh though. I think I can avoid slits all together and use like shower curtain. I have something in mind. That green mesh will look awesome. ordering it today. That picture shows tan but I will get green. Tough stuff according to the info.

Thanks Don.
