Thanks for the ideas. The plywood is already carpeted and there is zero space between it and the wall when folded. There was barely enough room for the thin indoor outdoor carpet. We just added it to give the air mattresses a soft base. The hinges were designed to fold the beds completely flat to the wall. I've thought several times about trying the memory foam toppers but I'm not sure they will be thick enough and they are heavy and expensive. It may be my best option to try though.

I've been using a queen sized Air mattress for years. I must admit our camp sleeping is not desirable or restful. I plan to upgrade to an 8" Memory Foam from Walmart. http://www.walmart.com/ip/Spa-Sensations-8-Memory-Foam-Mattress-Multiple-Sizes/12542630 .

That is the mattress I got for our ct and it is extremely comfortable. Much better than the one in my bedroom costing five times as much. You will be pleased with that mattress.

I don't like memory form. I went with a foam mattress from Ikea. it has a fairly robust padded canvas-like cover that zips off for washing. It is about 4" thick. That on a plywood platform and it was as comfortable as I could want - just exactly like a platform bed at home.

That looks like a good option, I just don't know about storing it. The weight isn't bad at around 15 pounds. Can it be folded or rolled up? I'm going through Dallas this weekend and could stop at Ikea on the way through and check it out.

It comes rolled up but I wouldn't try to RE store it that way... it wants to be flat. I just folded up the platform with it "attached" It is not too thick remember.

Yeah, but I have zero clearance between my platforms and walls when they are folded up. No room for a mattress. It has to be something I can take off and fold or roll up when I fold the bed frames up.

Not to mention my queen bed is halved with each half of the frame on opposite walls.

Go with 2 mattresses (1/2 and half of the queen) and rig something to strap them to the "bottom' of the folded up platform... or rebuild the hinge side so the mattress can stay put (my plan)

Nope. Not an option. As mentioned earlier in this thread, I use my trailer as a toyhauler and I need all the available space for the toys. Not to mention, the queen is split top to bottom, not side by side. That's why I originally started this thread. My requirements are a little different than the average person, so I was looking for options outside the box so to speak. I appreciate all your thoughts though.

Re: Air mattress alternative

Postby Xtremespeed » Sun Nov 11, 2012 4:29 pm

Well, I broke down and bought a memory foam mattress topper today from Sams Club. It's a 2 1/2" thick 4lb density pad. Feels pretty nice, but lets my ribs and hips sink to the base, so it's not going to work like I had hoped. It's also quite heavy and bulky. Walmart has a 4" thick topper, but it is only 2.5lb density. I decided to try a thermarest underneath the topper for a base. The only one I can find that is a full 30" wide is the 2" thick BaseCamp XL. I know they have a 4" called Dreamtime but the price seems beyond ridiculous. Academy has a 4" but it's only 25" wide. Anyways, I bought the BaseCamp Xl and I'm waiting for it to expand to try under the topper. Hopefully it's just enough to keep my ribs and hips off the plywood. :worship:

After 3 nights on the memory foam topper over the Thermarest, I'm not impressed. Other than the weight, I really like the topper, but I'm a little disappointed in the Thermarest. Even after letting it expand for 24 hours and adding air the first time to help it, it doesn't seem to want to self inflate. The Magellan I had inflated much better and was twice as thick. I wish it had been wide enough. I had to add a lot of air to the Thermarest and at 2" thick, it's not quite enough support. I am returning it and have ordered the 3 1/2" thick 4 wheel drive model from Sportsmansguide.com to try. Hopefully it will inflate better and offer a little better support with the extra 11/2" height. It also saves me about $40 for a pair over the Thermarest.
