Converting Cargo Trailers into TTTs

The 6 x 12 V Nose model I was considering has a typical 12 exterior length and then a separate measurement for the approximate 2 foot for the v-nose is quoted.

So if you compare it to a 6 x 14 flat front then the flat front unit has a 84 SF area while the 6 x 12 with a 2 foot V Nose (exterior length) then you would get about 78 SF or 6 SF less or slightly more then a 7% loss of floor space.

Yes interior dimensions would change the numbers slightly, but I am not cutting hairs with this calculation.

But I have plans drawn for both ways and I can make the 6 x 12 with 2 VNose work. Actually the one I am looking at has almost a 3 foot V Nose and that would reduce the loss to 3 SF - not so bad.

I guess I look at it differently.......a 6 x 12 (box or with a V) has a set length (overall trailer)......therefore a V gives more interior space......If you compare a 6x12 with V to a 6x14 box, you're not comparing apples to apples as the overall length of the trailer is different......Am I wrong in this??

wtcreaux,
It can be a litte "gray" in this area depending on how you look at it....IMHO. If I want to keep the total length about the same in the comparisons then I think my view makes sense for me. But if you look at both boxes being the same length and then throw in the nose, then your view is more right. And for me what makes a difference other then the wind resistance is how the manufactures charge for what you get based on how they promote their sizes.

So in a nutshell for me and the logic behind my comment, I have some CT quotes for a 6x14 flat front and then for a 6 x12 with a almost 3 foot V Nose (and that is how they list it - 6 x 12 VNose) and they are within a couple of hundred of dollars of each other. I like the perceived lesser wind resistance of the VNose model, but the few extra SF of the Flat front model would be welcomed....thus my quandary.

Does this make sense or am I mulling over something that is not really that critical in the long run? I do not know.
Bob

Some thoughts. What is the weight of the two and is that a factor? Brakes on either of them? Two axles? I have heard that a V nose seems to handle better in the wind, but that the actual mpg is not much different than a curved front (don't know about compared to an actual flat front). There is no room on a v-nose for a propane tank, battery box etc on the front.

Here is a little discussion on the mpg

These are Car Mate trailers and they do not post weights. One I had to send an email to the factory to get (6 x12 VNose Advantage) and the other I estimated (for 6 x 14 Custom Cargo) from a 7 X 14 weight.

I have 1605 lbs for the 6 x 12 V Nose unit and a estimated 1625 for the Flat Front 6 x 14 unit. I will order Single Axle with Brakes.

The Car Mate Advantage unit does offer a pretty sizable front tongue setup for tanks and the like.

I think I just made up my mind to go with the 6 x 14 flat front. Once cannot find decisive data on which is better. There are many thoughts and many inputs from driving experiences. The flat front gives me a slightly easier layout to work with both on the inside and the front exterior.

...but check to see that the front is not actually slightly rounded. Many are. Also, the fiberglass front cap can leak, so you *may* want to caulk it, or better yet, fill it with spray foam from a can to seal it and to give it a little more resistence to cracking when brushing a low tree branch or limb. If you see a water stain on the inside front plywood, it usually means the fiberglass front cap is not sealed...which was often the case with the CTs that Home Depot had on the lot here. Also, some manufacturers are making flat-front CTs without the fiberglass front cap.

For what it's worth.

Best wishes.
My goal...

Thanks Prem,

The model I am looking at has a good size fiberglass (believe it is that versus plastic) top corner cover and the front corners also seem to have a small radius corner with a aluminum corner cover. So I think the quality of the job will be good. But to take the precautions you mention would be a good idea.

A while back I shared that my denium ceiling insulation was freezing at 37 deg ......

A whole bunch of you thermo scientists jumped out & laughed your butts off ....
Nothing can freeze unless it's below 32 deg ......GOD - OTTCT is so stupid !!
That's breaking the laws of bla bla bla ........

No body was however willing to try it .........
Well now my same rocket scientists who laughed sooooo HARD
What you say when they make snow at 40 deg
Isn't that even more impossible at 40 deg vs. 37 deg :frightened: :frightened:

said Joe VanderKelen, president of manufacturer SMI Snowmakers.
In very dry weather, snow can be made in temperatures as warm as 40 degrees.
