Converting Cargo Trailers into TTTs

Yes Jerry, where do you come up with these. It is intriguing but still way more cash outlay then my $25 5000 BTU window unit. It would be good to see some real life experiences and so forth. But googling did not produce anything like that.

Yes they are interesting, but how much and since they are designed for refrigerated trailers, are they too much or our needs? Plus they are 15A units. But the concept would work at a competitive price to what we can get here in the US (other type units)?

So after a 3 year break from planning a CT conversion, circumstances have led the wife to request that I buy one. (No more pickup truck to bring home couches and whatnot that she wants)

Aaaaand, I've always been leery of cutting holes in the roof. Didn't like the window-shaker idea. Had resigned to the "portable room ac" unit, until I find your post on a "mini-split ac". Small footprint inside, much quieter inside, no roof hole. I'm imagining parking, then placing the outside fan and plugging it in. Your post is for a 7k BTU, which i'd guess is too small for my needs (?)

So to save me hours of internet reading, here's the scenario:
7x14 CT, generally at a campground with power, sleeping 4 people (ages 42, 42, 11, 9), in brutal humid and hot Florida summer nights (85F and 80% humidity)
What would you suggest product wise? Also, do I need to worry about condensation/rust when i'm cold inside/hot outside?

Thanks,
steve

So to save you many hours of Internet reading , here is my best guess.

I have never tried that 7,000 btu mickey mouse unit & have no idea how well it works.
There are many larger 9,000 btu mini splits - that would work quite well.
But I'm sure they would not be covered by the manufacture warranty, if you get my drift.
If your only gonna use it at a park with power units start at $399 + line set + maybe shipping.
Look at the submital sheet to see how much moisture each unit removes.

In the summer heat you should not have condensation problems

Looking back a ways to where you (Jerry) mentioned that more power seemed to be flowing into the new LifePo4 batteries than the even older FLA batteries were accepting. After reading more about LifePo4 that should definitly be the case. The LifePo4 battery cells have much lower internal resistance than lead-acid. Less resistance = more current flow. By the same token that is what can make LifePo4 more damgerous in a short circuit situation. Apparently there have been a number of total loss fires with LifePo4's in motorcycles. Many have been traced back to poor battery mounting that resulted in shorts and to poor insulation on the main positive wires that connect to the battery.

The more I read the more interesting LifePo4 becomes. However, the initial cost is still high to shockingly high. As for the longer life, I hope that works out to be true. Conservative that I am, I have some distrust of lifespans that come from extrapolation of short term data and laboratory data. Still, LifePo4 does hold great promise. New technology does need early adopters to help prove its worth to the slow to adopt, like me.

Hi MtnDon

I don't see myself as an early adopter.... the bottom line is Flooded batteries and AGM are 100% crap....when compared to Lithium
they don't work in my application PERIOD.....so I have NO CHOICE in the matter.

But as we discussed before 98% of folks have leaf springs, flooded batteries & crappie 1" insulation and all swear they are GREAT , best in the world. !!
Its always gonna be like that.
NONE of these opinionated folks have tried it both ways, I have compared both side by side in great detail. Are they perfect in every single case NO - of course not !!
if you use a more powerful battery, not inside a plastic box - with exposed terminals and dump your bike, I don't see how they blame their negligence on the battery causing a short - fire ?

I can show people numbers up the WAZOO - that they are MUCH cheaper no matter how you cut it.....if your using them every day....
use them 4 weekends per year - stay with your T105's. This is America - let the other 98% spend their money as they please

You tried my trailer insulation method & can verify its fantastic... you use almost nothing for heating and cooling...
if your house batteries fail & you get flooded , its your money "NOT MINE" ....
people can still watch analog TV with converter boxes  some folks don't have phones where the gov can track them 24 / 7
some use a 1,500 watt roof ac and 5kw gen set - I use a 200 watt mini split & solar

I just share my info for the 1-2% that might by chance be interested. they can decide if its for them or not.
I don't think a single person here can claim I'm misleading anybody with wrong info.
I understand if someone can only afford Mac & Cheese vs Flank Steak- or Rib Eye ....
when I started renting in 1980 a renter behind me paid $400 for 400 sq ft 40 year old apt...
I paid $650 for 1,800 sq ft new town house & got a room mate. to each his own I guess

i wonder if the engineers at Boeing agree with you. ;)

may i ask where you sourced your Lithium battery and how much it was?

i feel that for me its more economical for me to get walmart marine batteries (i know its not true deep cycle...) and simply have them swap them when they go bad.
If their performance is not adequate anymore there are plenty of ways to make them defective for a free swap.

Having said all that I consider myself a little bit of a techie and enjoy reading your blog! i wish i would have found it before i started my conversion. some costly mistakes could have been avoided.
What my trailer lacks in High End Power Production Equipment it makes up with a DIY control system to optimize power consumption. (motion sensors, temp sensors, different operating modes to control lights, fans and Inverter alike)
if i find the time i def want to share my project. I assume you would enjoy reading it and have some good feedback.

At the moment i am working on a one axis solar track (arduino based) to get the best power i can from my 250W renogy panel.

I have a friend like that - he just calls it a 30 day free rental

Each has its advantage. For the average weekend camper, there isn't much benefit to lithium from a cost/benefit standpoint. There are benefits - just not cost wise.

A Ferrari will get me to Santa Fe quicker than a Yugo provided they let me speed.

I agree with you 10,000%, if your only a weekender any shitty Walmart T105 is great & get it recycled 2 times per year on the rental return program.
all I'm doing is telling people if you wanna go 500 MPH .... then do it the lithium way
