Agreed! Closed cell foam is virtually impossible to beat, although it is messy to install and more expensive than other insulation. And with it sprayed in place it will stick and close off all avenues for water vapor to contact the metal skin. The hard part will be shaving it level to the ribs/studs.

I have read statements made by some others that it is not good to use because it is a rigid mass when cured. Some say the trailer must flex; I believe that to be BS. Springs are made to flex; other things wear out when they flex. My opinion.

100% agree with you MtnDon.

When I spray foamed my bus, I shaved the excess off with a serrated bread knife and/or a Surform (tm) hand plane and/or a belt sander. It went fairly fast. The sheetmetal was so stiffened by the foam that it never flexed again and the sound deadening was impressive.

Prem

When you post something in the future you may want to add more pictures or other details,
I looked over some of your older stuff and 30-40% of the links are dead.

So you guys are FOR spray insulation...??

Prem, wasn't it you who posted a condensation problem recently?

IIRC, the problem occurred with a rigid sheet foam installation, with water vapor laden air infiltrating in between the aluminum skin and the rigid foam. Not sure how that was edge sealed?

I have been contemplating doing that and either (a) using foam in a can to seal the foam sheets/blocks into place, or (b) using a foam friendly caulk to seal the foam to frame joint at the outside face as an air gap seal at the skin. Then maybe foam in a can again to fill any gap, or just a bead of the same caulk. I have had good luck with GE Silicone II paintable caulk and XPS foam in home construction. That stuff remains flexible forever unlike many acrylic caulks.

Not sure which way I lean... though I do lean towards the TigerFoam spray foam in the fire rated version.

I am not following your caulk plan. And what is Tiger foam? Are you saying you got mold from placing foam boards in without securing them and the condensation collected between the foam and the exterior?

I am contemplating having CarMate build mine with the plywood next to the aluminum skin and then adding foam boards glued to the plywood between the wood studs and then using great stuff and insulation tape to fill the gaps and tidy it up. Then adding plywood over the insulation followed by wainscoting/beadboard.

I am curious whether the plywood/aluminum interface would experience any rot/mold/undesirable reaction over time.

MtnDon

I'm also a little confused with your moisture Thesis
Generally what you say is 100% correct.
If you have 10 gallons of air inside a cavity that will hold more moisture then 3 oz of air ?
The cracks between the foam
You could always spray / seal the wood with a sealer -

I will know by spring if that little bit of extra foam / sealer makes a night & day difference
I have built mine so small sections can be taken apart.
In your all spray foamed trailer - would some of your wiring be encased inside the foam ??
In my case it would be because I have at least 20+ exterior lights & cameras.
This I would see as a drawback to solid sprayed foam ?

(continued...cuz honesty is the best policy)

Rule 8: Help others with the skills and knowledge you gained building/working on your rig.
Rule 9: Camp at Quartzsite, Arizona (Arizona's third largest city in January consisting of 99.99% RVs camped out in the desert around the world's largest swap meet/gem & mineral show). Heading south of Quartzsite find your way to Santispak Beach on Conception Bay, Sea of Cortez, Baja, Mexico. (It's 17 miles south of Muleje, 550 miles below the border. Pronounced Moo-le-hey.)
Rule 10*: Any one of us could be dead next year. Life is short. Go exploring. You've got the trailer. People will think you are crazy, irresponsible and betraying the group. Oh well. When you get home (if ever), tell them it was horrible and that they should never do what you did. (It's what they want to hear and it keeps them from nagging you with negativity.) Wipe that grin off your face when you're around them.
 :MLAS

* Because happiness has been shown by psychologists to consist largely of our accumulated memories of our experiences and our travels, not the acquisition of wealth or material things.

HDEGirl,

Yes and yes.

I cut sheet foam and set it in the walls and ceiling of my cargo trailer. It was cheap and fast. Since it's not air tight against the outer, metal skin, condensation forms and runs down the metal. Mold grows. Not good. Spray foam eliminates this issue and strengthens the skin enough to keep it from vibrating/flexing.

Good?

Prem

P.S. Like your posts.
