Heating data

Well in case someone is interested here is the heating data for my 7 x 18' trailer.

Due to the insulation 3" all around I don't require heating unless its below 40 as it picks up 25 deg above exterior temp during the night. If someone is comfy at 65F no heat is required.

It takes about 40 btu per hour for every degree F heating required, or 400 btu for every 10 degrees.

So let's say it's zero F outside and interior temp desired is 75 F. Recall my insulation picks up 25 deg F so 75 deg - 25 deg F equals 50 degrees of heat required. 50 x 40 btu per deg F equals 2,000 btu per hour at zero F exterior temp. Translating that into elec watts is equal to about 660 watts as 1 watt is equally to approx 3 btu .

Last night it was 40 deg F outside , cold windy and raining, I heated the inside to 75 deg F for 12 hours using about 1,400 watts total.

If someone had an appliance running that consumed about 116 watts per hour, such as a tv - this would provide the required heat for my trailer.

Cheers ottct

Miracles do happen with RV'S

Roadtrek 1,600 ah lifepo4 - they are still chasing OTTCT's 2,000 ah lifepo4 $21,000- and they want about $196,000 total for the pleasure with an extra $5600 for 600 watts in panels compared to my 2500 watts, @ 1/4 the price and less power than OTTCT

So does that make ottct worth $300,000

A few nights now I spent at about 19-20F and heated to 75 deg.

Recall I pick up 25 deg over exterior with my body heat and equipment.

So I need an extra 30 deg for heating to 75 and per my formula that's 40 btu x 30 deg per hour , or 1200 btu per hour or about 400 watts.

This was the exact result of my real life experience as I used 400 watts per hour to heat my trailer.

But how do I fish from it?
Seriously, for the right person/family, it is an interesting concept.

How long does it take someone to borrow my ideas ?
Well I talked with these folks a few years back if they wanted to make me a video about OTTCT.....
as they make very nice video's....

So 2 years latter, here is their video on

IS it POSSIBLE TO HAVE RV SOLAR AIR CONDITIONING

I posted their video on my site, seams like solar AC on RV's is finally catching on.....

Dear OTTCT

Are there any additional reports on a temperature efficiency of your trailer?
I assume condensation is not an issue due to good insulation, but what about air quality and air circulation?
Do you have any forced air filtration system?

Thanks! :D

OTTCT,

No. No NASA, no UL. :(
Just an average dude from Oakville, Canada
I am interested in building a stealth cargo trailer - something like you did.
Well,that is eventually. Not now.
Currently I am at 'information gathering' stage. Reading your blog http://overthetopcargotrailer.blogspot.ca/, as well as blogs, and ideas from other enthusiasts like you.
I can see the trend - there are more and more people trying to built/remodel cargo trailers.
Regardless of the region where it is built - two factors could not be ignored - the HEAT and the COLD.
Both could be compensated with sufficient amount of insulation. At cost, obviously. I am not talking about money.
Well-insulated enclosed space would accumulate vapors (humidity), and odors.
We can open the door and let the fresh air inside. Then most of the energy used to heat the trailer will be wasted.
Ideally, the air should be circulating within the cargo. Technically it is doable, but practically speaking - is it really worth it?

Anyways
As always - we are waiting for your updates (here, and at your own blog)!

Best regards,
Serge

Hey OTTCT,

I wonder if one of these fancy Tesla Powerwall batteries will work in a cargo trailer conversion?

Hey Tom

If I could find one I would go for it.
My 16kw battery is 360 lbs
Tesla 87kw battery is 950 lbs
Much higher energy density.

There is a video on you tube of someone talking their tesla pack apart, looked like maybe 30-40 sectional packs. If I find it again I'll post a link.

Here's an interesting "all-in-one" LiPo battery, mppt controller, and inverter: https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/the-lycan-powerbox-ready-when-you-aren-t#/.

Thanks Aggie79

Very nice video, item costs $1499 for 100 watt panel & 75 ah lifepo4 battery. Nice system but you can build something not as nice but DIY for $700 , but this is what America is all about, something for everybody.
