Yes, they are pricey... but folks love them and they are ideal for your situation.

If all you need is a fridge, then upgrading to solar and inverter with regular compressor fridge would cost the same or more.

If you were willing to run the generator to charge batteries once a day, you could just get another battery, an inverter, and a 110vac dorm fridge. It would do the same thing with a little less efficiency and would cost about 1/2. Just some options to consider.

Maybe you can get lucky and find a good used unit like McDave did. His is essentially the same thing as the cooler type, just packaged in a traditional fridge config.

McDave,

I got excited and forgot to say thank you for your info. I read and understand what you said, mostly. Sounds like what you have and what I want are more efficient than a three way, right? Your price was :o cheaper. But I don't see this one going for much less than what amazon is asking.

the portability is awesome on the unit I want. Hope she understands or forgets to load the gun before I run!

Tommy, check Ebay for these fridges. I saw a used one for $235 and others new for $550. There are some brands i am not familiar with. I did see Dometic and Norcold which are both good names. Careful on sizes too.

Will do Don. I have time.

They seem big too at 61 qts. I will take a few measurements and see. Just inside the door to the left would be a good spot. I would like the 61 qt if it fits ok.

1qt = .0334cu ft so 61qt is about 2 cu ft. That is larger than the smallest 1.5 cu ft. Dorm fridge. You can use that to figure out what you need.

Why would the 3 way need venting if used without propane?. Because of the boiling of the ammonia? If I remember right they did seem to work better on propane.

Tommy, make nice cushion for the top and you have a seat. I am assuming they are sturdy enough for that? :-)

Tommy, another thing to consider is if your trips are going to be 5 days or less, a good Yeti knockoff and some dry ice would last a good week. I dont think you'd need much of the dry ice either. It may in fact be too cold and freeze things. I use to fill 4 1/2 gallon jugs of water and freeze them to 0 deg in my deep freezer..that would keep cold food cold for 5 days in an old Coleman cooler. I just kept drinks in a separate cooler so the in/out was minimized on the food. The jugs were spaced out and they kept everything from floating in water.

I have information.
I love this chit!

That blue coolers dimensions just happen to be perfect, little did I know, just luck. The closest size that fits those dimensions are a 35L one that holds 47 12 oz. cans. Dimensions of blue cooler= 31L X 18 1/2 H X 15 3/4 W

Dimensions of 35L Dometic= 35L X 16 H X 16 W

I pack 4 chicken thighs,4 burgers, 1 dozen eggs, 2 sticks of butter. Quart of half and half. Maybe a steak. one case of beer. It will be tight but I can keep some beer on ice. All dry goods are fine above the hood area.

Have to move new DC center a little back. Cooler stays down by bed at night, comes forward in day with bed up. What do you think?

Oh, the one spot it will not be is up against the head wall there as look in from the door.

I freeze my food as single portions since there's just me. I have 2 coolers and thought I can use both if I go longer than 3 days. I think my original plan was for coolers to fit under the dinette when it's out. But I don't use it as a bed, its for company. And I think I forgot to check fit before I finished making it.

It looks like one of these portable icemakers might be a handy travel companion. Has anyone used one with an inverter or generator or out on the road? The specs say 1.9amps while making ice and 2.7amps for delivery.

Looks like it will fit well Tommy! If it will fit, a little larger cooler may do you better if the Mrs goes with you. Almost 2x on everything. That or take a cooler just for the drinks and chill it all before you go and freeze water in small jugs so it lasts longer.

Padilen, that is a good idea on freezing food for coolers. It takes a little advanced planning, bit I use to do that also on things I could freeze which is mainly the meats. They thaw out and contribute to the overall cold in the cooler.

Iconfabul8... you done any more work on your CTC?
