Installation of windows in a enclosed trailer

Postby tdg » Sun Sep 13, 2009 11:31 am

I will be adding windows to my 5x8. I will be using 24x14 typical two piece windows. The trailer has the 16 inch on center z metal for studs. I will need to cut one stud on each side. I plan to either bolt or have my brother in law weld in an upper and lower reinforcement pieces to replace the stud.

My question is do the reenforcement pieces need positioned so the window rest on them?

No. The new cross pieces will just carry the load in place of the upright you cut out.

Most window manufacturers recommend 1/8 inch clearance between window frame and the wall opening. In other words, the window rough opening should be 1/4 inch wider and 1/4 inch taller than the window.

 What edcasey said. (Same for roof vent cutouts.)

And remember to insulate or caulk so that dissimilar metals are not touching. Electrolysis.

(Ah, an additional benefit of an all aluminum trailer.)

Thanks for the Help guys. This will really get my camper on its way, after the windows, insulation, pretty simple wiring and of course AC.
