I am planning to have the trailer manufacturer rough in the framing for my windows. Then I will cut out the aluminum skin after I get it home and instal myself.
Any advice/ lessons learned on what to request from the factory on this?

Hopefully they will put the rounded corner pieces in. If not, install some and then use the framing as a guide and cut with a RotoZip! Best tool ever for cutting windows. (As long as you have a proper sized guide. Don't try to freehand a RotoZip)

DIY vs Factory install.

Postby brianjonesphoto » Wed Oct 23, 2019 2:16 pm

Forgive me if this answer is buried in this thread.

From the collective experience here I'm trying to figure out if I would be better off spec'ing windows installed in specific places at build time or installing the windows myself later? Price wise it's less than $100 a window to order them installed vs doing it myself. That seems like a reasonable labor cost assuming they are framed in. It would save me at least a half days time likley more.

Thanks

If ordering I would have them put in.

brianjonesphoto, Howdy;

I'll second what Cindy (Rainier70), said. Not only is it worth it but
if they screw it up they can fix it and you'll never know.

I just ran across this video and thought that, even though it is van specific, it should be very helpful to anyone who's planning on doing their own work. This guy is a professional. It appears that he knows about a lot of the tips and tricks necessary to quickly complete a successful job.

Here's another window question. Has anyone every regretted putting in windows that are too BIG? I'm thinking 30x30 or 22x46 on the curb side and don't want to regret it.

Thanks.

hello again cargo trailer builders... i am looking for a supplier of rv windows that are 30 x 30 square. looking for the tinted ones with screens and trim rings. 1.5" walls.

i really like the ones that weroll.com uses on their trailers, but i have not heard back from emails or messages sent. and they dont answer their phone and the mailbox is full.

any ideas on who/where i could source these?

thanks and happy building.

I had a Stealth. They installed windows. Left dealer with specs as to where I wanted them( gave them height in inches off floor and distance from rear of trailer). Was worth it. You could always try to negotiate window price. That saved me some $$$$.

I recently installed windows in my new 6*12 build. Here is how I did it. I did weld in frames which would be how the factory would do it. There are other ways (and I have done it other ways), but this would be he strongest in my opinion.

I got a really good deal on two new RV windows and at the end of the day, I like building it myself.
However, if you are not sure of yourself, I would recommend you have the factory install as others have said.

Love looking at all of your trailers. I do get a bit of a chuckle at your stealth designs. Not because I think you are doing something wrong but because I got my 4 ft long 2 ft tall RV junk yard windows going in my 12 ft trailer. Only way I can be less stealth is to mount a neon sign on the roof lol

Re: Questions on putting in windows

If this question was answered in this thread, I missed it and I apologize. I am building a 6x12 v-nose and ordered two 20x24" vertical windows. My wall thickness is 1 1/2" and that was what I ordered in my new windows. I measure the gap between the window and trim ring and it comes out to 1 3/4". Is there a trim ring for 1 1/2" or do I shim the difference with 1/4" plywood. Any suggestions are welcomed and appreciated...thanks!

Tape off and run a heavy 1/8 inch bead of calk inside and out maybe? I am facing similar situation where my walls are 3/4 studs and the RV windows are 1 1/2 heavy inside to inside. Am thinking about doing an extra 1/2 inch of foam on inside or making a 1/2 in plywood dressing trim for around them.
