Teardrops n Tiny Travel Trailers

I am in the process of converting a 7x16 cargo trailer into a camper. Can someone recommend a door latch to replace the existing/factory latch in the side entry door? I'm curious to what others have done about this.

Hey MichiganFlipper - Looks good! When I got suggestion on installing mine someone was kind enough to mention that type of door handle / latch is not always secure when "bouncing down the road". You might want to look into some method of securing the door for travel time only. Mine has one of those big "bar latches" which locks the door in a very secure manner. Problem is with the "bar latch" I could be locked in by some prankester. I set mine up with an eye bolt (another good suggestion from this site) so I can padlock the "bar latch" away form the door so when not traveling we can lock it "open". Good luck.

I was wanting both type latches on the door also. I may be missing something but thought if a guy would lock the flanges together without the bar latch in it would keep somebody from locking someone inside with the bar latch if the flanges would not open.

we took it on a 200 mile trip and never poped door i wll post pics on the latch plate

Thats the same handle/Latch RVs use.. Their doors don't come open. As long as the trailer is built well and doesn't flex to much it should stay closed. I do lock my deadbolt on mine when Its going down the road just for a little extra security.

here is the inside of my door it is foamed under the wood which made it very solid

had to build out the latch plate due to the gap between the door and the frame

When I unlock the bar on side and back, the locks go right back into the hasp. That way I know where they are and can't be locked in to the trailer.
