Converting Cargo Trailers into TTTs

My 7x14 interstate

Postby rapalapaul » Tue Sep 14, 2010 12:27 am

Well 2 years ago I picked up a 1994 7x14 interstate enclosed trailer off CL for $800 It was in rough shape I put a brand new axle last year I had them change the angle of the arms for more ground clearance.. Had to do some patch work had a couple holes in it. got all the lights working and put a laminet floor in. Its still not very pretty but it does the job. It is 7 ft tall so it nice for me (6.4) I really want to make thins into something me and my gf can spend the weekend in when riding our quads. THE BAD thing is this thing is so bad to pull it had the round top cap but the front is flat with the added ground clearance and with it being 7ft tall its kills my mpg. I thought about selling it and getting a v-nose. I got about $1500 into it and would really like to keep it. I seen this nose cone on here http://www.nosecone.com/appull.htm the middle trailer looks just like mine. Do u think this would make it pull alot better? I thought with that and the rear tab things maybe I can love this trailer again. It s only a single axle so I will be doing a very basic conversion to keep the weight down. 2 quads is about 1400lbs so I only have about 200 more in cargo I can hold. I have a 2010 F150 supercrew with a cap on it so alot of my gear can stay in the truck. So should I sell and get a v-nose or try the nose cone and tabs??

P.S i spent the last 7 hours reading every post this site rocks!!!

Why not put a wing on the top of your truck topper?

Paul,
I have a nose cone on our 5x10 Wells Cargo. It came with the used trailer. I don't know how much they cost. I read about them prior to committing to buying the trailer.

Have you checked out this video? http://www.nosecone.com/trailer.html
The dealer I got my trailer from has that demonstration in his office. There are no tricks it does work like the video shows.

I figured if the big rigs are using them or something similar there had to be an acceptable payback.

I think i am going to call the nose cone company and get a quote. I seen the video was wondering if it was fixed but if u seen it first hand then it must work. I really dont what to put a wing on my truck. I would sell my trailer and get a v nose before I do that. I looked at wings when I had my 2003 f10 and they were not cheap. This truck just looks wat to nice for a wing. Thanks for the help guys

The best thing you could do would be to add nose cone, camper shell on PU and airtabs on the tv and trailer.
Alot of people on here talk about adding airtabs to the trailer but if they are put on the tv it really cleans up the airflow in the gap area.
You will notice alot better visibilty in your mirrors when driving in the rain.
I have been told by other truck drivers that adding a wing to a flat top tractor dropped fuel mileage, but this may be just a poorly designed wing
more for show than go.
But yes if you add a nose cone you should see some improvement in fuel mileage.

well I called nose cone today. $461 plus $102 shipping. I just have to figure if I want to put that kind of money into this old trailer. I figure the tabs will be about another $170. Thinkin maybe save up for a new 7x16 v nose that way I can put a shower in the v nose. I guess my bank account will deside. I see 7x16 traliers on ebay for about $3200. I dont live to far from elkhert in. so I can pick them up.
