Screen door solved! Inexpensive and effective!

Postby Gonefishin » Sun Oct 30, 2011 11:15 pm

I've finally built and field tested my screen door after input from other members (Thanks!) and a little trial and error. I ended up building the "door" from a window screen "kit." All I had to do was:

*Cut the frame to fit the inside of the door and assemble. (Easy!)
*Apply the screen to the frame. (easy with supplied roller tool)
*Add hinges to the finished "door." (Mark, drill, screw)
*Add some sticky-back magnetic strips to the framework. (Peel and stick it on)
*Add two aluminum supports across the door to reduce flexing.
*Place a peice of foam pipe insulation over the bottom of the door that fits snug on the carpet and also into the door opening.
*Screw on handles both inside and out that don't interfere with closures.
*Hang it up with the hinges
*Apply some foam insulation strips to the "inside" hinge side, and inside top.

Ta Da! Works like a charm, seals all bugs out, easy open and close, very light weight, magnetically secure closure, and just sturdy enough.

It opens fully for easy loading/unloading of the trailer, and the friction of the bottom foam on my carpets keeps the door open without any latching. It just rubs lightly across the carpet. Perfect!

The window kit was $17 at Lowes. Hinges a few dollars. Handles a couple dollars. Pipe insulation a few bucs, and magnetic tape was about $10.[/img]
