Im in the planning stages for a 5x8 or 10 conversion. Side access doors seem to be rare in this size of trailer, especially in my budget. What have you all done to add doors to your trailers? Is it hard to build your own? What is the cost of having one installed at a shop?

RV doors are super expensive in the land of polar bears and Igloos.
You also have to remember, a side door ruins one of two walls for full usage.
Do you have barn or ramp door on back?

If your trailer has the height, you can look into those mobile home doors with the frame that has screw holes built all around it.
Some of those doors can be modified to be shorter but they're a lot of work to do that. You can sometimes pick those up at used goods outlets.
I got one to use on a chicken hen house not long ago. I think I paid $35 for it and it had a dead bolt installed.

I'm still shopping for a trailer. I'm trying to figure out if buying without a door is an option. I intend to buy a trailer with, barn doors and installing a galley in the back so a side door is a must!

Thinking out of the box for a moment…It sounds like you want to make a rear galley like a teardrop. You could buy a trailer with barn rear doors then remove them and use one of the doors on the side. (Maybe sell the other and make some money) Then make a lite one piece rear door that swings up and gives you shade and rain protection…like on a teardrop. A simple covered frame and a few poles and away you go. You could even throw a screen over it and make a room out of it as I see you live in Alberta where the bugs are so big they almost clearance to land.

See what your dealer wants as as a price for a rv door. Check what a flush door with rv door lock would be. You could always add a window to this.
Dealers have some wiggle room with prices. Mine agreed to match another 2 competitor window prices and it sealed the deal for me.
Steve Cox ordered a door and then cut an opening for it. Maybe you could find it in one of his threads.
