Blessing in disguise

I took the week of the 4th off to work on the trailer. The plan was to wire, insulate, and get her ready for the maiden voyage. A week before we had a hail storm and the trailer took a little peppering. My original thought was to take the money from insurance and put it towards the build.

When I got into taking the plywood off I noticed mold on the plywood and two vertical "studs" were rusting rapidly. As I stepped out of the trailer the window fell out. There was literally 3 " of caulk holding the windows in. The company failed to caulk it properly.

The next thing I noticed is that a section of about 4' by 6' had pulled aways from the studs. The adhesive had failed and there were some stud members that they had missed the entire stud with the adhesive. The advice Gadgetman got about the glue used on trailers to hold the skin may have been spot on.

I called the dealer that sold me the trailer and they failed to follow up. I called the warranty department at the company I purchased the trailer from and they have not followed up.

In short, I would not buy another Stealth Trailer. My experience has not been about a company devoted to the pursuit of excellence. Zero quality control and customer service.

The blessing is that since the trailer was considered a total loss I am only eating my deductible. On a positive note my insurance company, American Family, has been professional to deal with and has provided great customer service. My local agent has been great.

For all of you that are satisfied with your trailer, what brand did you buy new? Would you do it again? How has the customer service been? I'll be looking in Minnesota for a dealer. So far I have been speaking with Featherlite.

Any feedback is appreciated. It looks like I'll be buying another trailer this winter and delaying my project. No worries though, it gives me more time to be creative.

Thanks,
Mercurythunder

Hello Mercurythunder,

The trailer that I converted was a 'Wells Cargo-Autowagen'. When I stripped out the inside I had the exact opposite of your trailers condition they used a ton of glue (which I hate). There was only a little surface rust on the frame work on the trailer and it is a 2005 model that has spent its entire life with me outside in the elements.

Sincerely,

Jeff

My trailer is a Danzer. No longer made (I bought it used) and it seems to be well made.

This is my second year of camping in my 7 x 12 Liberty Stealth.

My dealer was often at the factory checking on ordered trailers. Mine had a lot of add ons so I hope not to run into any problems you've experienced.

I live in Goshen (Elkhart), Indiana where a number of manufactures are located. Lately the weather has been very hot and humid. I live behind the General Manager for one of the manufactures and he says the production floor is almost unbearable and the the crew goes home exhausted every day. They've been coming in early, 4:00 AM, to miss the worst of the heat but by noon the heat has taken it's tole. When the weather gets as bad as it's been lately you wonder how much a person's heart is in getting a window screwed in. The time of year the trailer is built has a lot to do with the quality. I know this company does stand behind their product and will make it right if the problem is their fault, and even some times when it is not.
