Been seeing some of these for sale locally for about $2k. Have not looked at them closely but have ridden inside them a couple of times and they seem well equipped for conversion to camping mode.
Your thoughts?

I was thinking the exact same thing as I was walking through the apparatus bays at work yesterday! The only thing I would caution about is the reason they are getting rid of them is they have usually driven the crap out if them. They were probably maintained in a regular basis, but still high hard mileage.

I have a friend that bought a used hospital bus with 60.000 miles on it that was used as a mobile clinic that took xrays, ect for 4000 it's a big turbo diesel it has 2 big generators on board and he gutted it and finished the inside as nice as anyone could.
He also bought a wheel chair equipped van for 2000 that was used for paitent transport that he said he would sell to me after he no longer needs it for his mother inlaw.
He had it painted and it looks new it also has a turbo diesel with 250.000 miles, I had thought about buying it to turn it into a camper van that I would pull my trailer with.
But I think I would rather have a motorhome to pull the trailer with and I have found a nice one locally,I am going to watch it for a while and see if I can buy it for less than what they are asking for it, although I think the price they are asking it's worth it.

there are a few websites with used amulances for sale.....plenty of low milage used units on the market.......the chassis's are heavy duty.....boxes are fully insulated with inverters and receptacles for charging equipment......the interiors can be easily gutted and remodeled......boxes made of aluminum....
ambulance dealers get used units for trade and look sell quickly.....

As an er/ems nurse i have spent my far share of time in these. Couple of cautions. Really heavy and really gas hogs. Also really top heavy, to be able to hold stretcher on the sides, and so tend to be tippy in the wind. But the wiring and electrical is all in place! Plus oxygen and suction for those really bad nights. Now the old Cadillac ambulances, those were a ride!

30 yrs paramedic. Old units are hea-vy. Not fuel efficient at all. Built much more ruggedly than an RV and the tradeoff is weight. Not a great deal of interior room for what you get, used up in cabinetry that may not be quite suitable for RV conversion. But wired for 110 usually, inverters, solid electrics and a heavy duty charging system.

Another alternative is sometimes they reuse the box and sell the chassis. You could build your own box anyway you like.
