Teardrops n Tiny Travel Trailers

I am now looking at two options. Either install a roof mount AC or a climateright cr5000. The like is below

Thoughts?? The climate-right looks like a great choice that would allow me to cool tents....camper and a few other things. The side hook ups come with the unit for $499 which is a pretty good deal considering the price of portable units. This will also sit on the tongue while camping and not take up any precious inside floor space.

This is the third generation of what was originally the PetCool. I have the PetCool in my teardrop and it works very well. It will cool my teardrop down to about 75 degrees on a 100 degree, 50% humidity day with the teardrop in direct sunlight.

On these units the condenser, compressor and supply fan are matched so you don't have to worry about the coils freezing up as sometimes happens when you restrict airflow on a window shaker unit.

Was is the BTU of your petcool? The web claims the 5,000 btu unit will cool 800 cubic feet. It honestly sounds to good to be true

Actually I stole theirs, OK not really because I saw a number of variations on this theme at a couple of TearJerker gatherings, had a Pet Cool the predecessor. 2500 BTU not enough coolth.

I live in Arizona and I have already camped in 100+ degree weather this year. Personally I bought a $100.00 cheapie room ac from home depot. I built a cover that matches the teardrop so it does not look tacky. It works great, it will freeze you out even, lol.

5000 btuh will probably work if you have substantial insulation, if you break the thermal bridge from CT exterior metal to the metal studs, and if you don't need to cool down the CT in a hurry.

The PetCool we have is 2500 btuh. I installed it in the tongue box. The supply side is ducted through the front of the teardrop up through the front headboard. The return air grill is located in the rear bulkhead and the return air is ducted below the the teardrop back to the tongue box.





While I really like the setup in our teardrop, if I were to do a CT conversion, I would use a window unit with probably around 8000 btuh permanently installed in the CT.

What did you use under the trailer for your duct?

The floor, walls and roof are insulated. I love the idea of the window unit as well. Just not sure i have enough confidence in myself to rig it up where it would work efficiently and not fall out driving down the road. The climateright seems to be the easiest to install and the cleanest to install.

Since you have a cargo trailer, with barn doors to boot, there is a member who constructed a removable box secured by E-tracks holding a window unit A/C, No David!. I wanted to make mine removable in the same fashion, but was limited by my 4x8 TTT size. I made mine permanent, inside to run w/hatch closed , but it was more work, and I'm still debating whether to cover the exposed ducting (frankly,I like the raw hardware look). But, if I had a cargo trailer w/ barn doors, I would've copied his method.

I made the mistake of thinking a Portable AC would work ? so I had no other choice than to make a rear wall on wheels so I could open and close it with the window AC and it worked out great.

If I were to build another trailer I would have the factory install the cut out and door so I could install it in the wall.
I am not sure if I would make it so it could be slid in and and out with some type drawer slides or have it permanently in place.
But the window AC is the way to go, esp = if you want to run a honda generator, the roof top AC's require a larger generator than the honda 2000 I have.

A plus to using a cargo trailer is that you can use larger equipment (higher btu A/C, greater wattage generator) than if confined to a 4x8 footprint; and I would guess that you aren't shooting for 1000 lbs either. Another plus would be being able to add a soundproofing enclosure (directing the racket upwards) around your generator!

I used 2"x3" aluminum downspout. I wrapped the downspout with 1/2" foam insulation. Then I split a 3"x4" downspout on one side the length of the downspout. I wrapped this around the smaller insulated downspout. Pop rivets and straps keep the split part together. Then I mounted it to the underside of the floor.
