A 5 gallon bucket with w toilet lid (buy or make)
Keep the snap lid for sealing it while traveling.

Fill it with about 6" of sawdust. put a bit more in each time after use.

No smell, even after several days in Nevada heat, cheap, can dispose of in the wild by burying it.
Ask any cabinet shop for sawdust, and you'll get all you need.

On a long road trip, you can buy kitty litter if you don't have time to chase down a sawdust supply.

Works for us.

Sam

Thedford brand works great. 5 gallon water and sewage capacity will give you 2-3 days of normal use and just about like using the toilet at home. I always dump mine in the sewer connection at the RV park if they are available before I head for home. I went with the porta potty in my trailer over having a normal black tank setup simply because the porta potty is much simpler to empty and keep cleaned out. Mine came from Walmart for around $60 if I remember correctly.

We did the 5 gal. Bucket with the kitty litter for awhile. Then the 5 gal porta potty found on Amazon not sure of the name but it worked good.but empting is never easy to deal with. Finally I installed a permanent RV toilet and since I go to campgrounds that have dump stations I could not be happier

5 gal bucket with a luggable loo lid. A few inches of wood pellets to take care of smell/liquids. Around here pellets are sold for heat, but any blue seal agway type place will have bedding pellets which should work even better.

I have both a Reliance hassock toilet and a low-end (cheap) Thetford chemical toilet. They are both great. If I'm going solo, I bring the hassock. It works great with scented cat litter.

+1on the Reliance Luggable Loo and kitty litter. As we have a cat (one left, after up to 11 at a time previously), I am quite accustomed to kitty litter...always have some handy, too.

Some things to look at in a porta potty are: How easy or messy they are to dump, how well they pump or add water to the bowl, and how well they seal out odors etc .

I don't currently have one, but I have been looking around a bit. Read the reviews on places like Amazon.

I currently use a system similar to the Double Duty bags etc. We are looking at the porta potty avenue for when we have the grandkids and other family members with us.

The Thetford Curve is my current favorite. It is a little larger though, so if storage space is a problem there are smaller porta pottis.

I can relate from personal experience this past November while living in a hunt camp for a week, that the typical porta-pottys are fairly easy to use, until it they become full. They then in my opinion, are quite a pain to clean. My hunting buddy and I made many trips to the creek to get water to flush with and then we were not too selective in the amount of water we used...translated = too much water per use results in many dump (pun??) trips. Even when we started to put the paper into trash bags.

Next time for these hunt trips and even for my off the grid camping, my wife and I will take, I will use a typical toilet like the Thetford units kept in the CT for those pee trips to the potti during the night. And for the other business I am going to try those homemade compost or bio bag units I am reading about now. These could be outside the CT in a Privacy Tent. Now if we are at formal campsites, then the campsite toilets became maybe a better option.

I use the super-clean, super-simple, disposable-anywhere PETT system with WAG bags. You can see an example here http://www.amazon.com/Cleanwaste-GO-anywhere-Portable-Toilet/dp/B001TKGAKO/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1387765636&sr=8-1&keywords=pett+portable+toilet. Google ("PETT porta potty") has dozens of images, reviews, and tons of places to buy at various prices. Here's the Bass Pro link. http://www.basspro.com/The-PETT%28Portable-Environmental-Toilet%29/product/45413/?hvarAID=shopping_googleproductextensions&om_mmc=shopping_googleproductextensions&kpid=45413%26adc=pg_315_11126_5282bc6ee4b006f67e955387_34345653031

I like it because you use it, zip it up, and throw it away. All approved. Used this system for years on overnight river trips too. Once you seal the bag, its odorless and no germs are going anywhere. Comes with a bit of dry chemical in the bag. The framework (seat) itself folds up out of the way nicely, is quick and easy to set up for use, and sturdy enough for most. I haven't even considered anything else after getting one of these. Previous experience with ammo boxes w/seat, 5 gal. buckets with seat and litter/dry chemicals. If you aren't going for full-on plumbing with a waste tank, this is my recommendation. And, unless you have a lot of users several times a day, the WAG bags are much easier to deal with than finding and using a dump station and hose. Here's a description:

"Disposal issues Resolved! Easy to use. No assembly required, sets up in seconds. Same Height and Size as a Standard Toilet. Folds into Briefcase Size with Dimensions of 19" x 14" x 5". SANITARY: Utilizes degradable waste bags (WAG™ bags) that gel waste, neutralize odor and begin the decay process, which make this system spill proof and hygienic. Special design of seat flange keeps outside of waste bag. clean STABLE: Three-leg design for stability on uneven terrain. LIGHTWEIGHT: Weighs only 7 lbs"

"The Wag Bag by Cleanwaste is the most sanitary, convenient, portable toilet solution available - complete with toilet paper and hand sanitizer. Prevents spread of disease with no spills, splashbacks or waste contact to provide easy waste management for large scale operations. Our toilet kit is the ONLY biodegradable solution that traps, encapsulates, deodorizes and breaks down waste with a NASA-developed gelling agent. Use it, seal it and toss it as normal trash."

Ebay has the bags for less than $1.00 each. Under a dollar a dump! WELL worth the convenience and cleanliness for me.

I have no commercial or other interest in this product other than when I need to do my business!

Gonefishing,
Do you use it for both solids and liquids?

Both. Personally, I only use it for solids, but sometimes liquid like to join the party, if ya know what I mean. My wife uses it for liquids as well, and it gets her approval. Its designed for both, the bags hold both, and I've never had a leak in over 15 years using one on river trips, and in my trailer for the past 3. Its just me and her, or me alone though. We try to use public facilities when available, and there's usually some nearby wherever I'm fishing, so I'd say it only gets maybe 30 or so uses a year. Still, its a winner, and I wouldn't leave home without it. Lots of commercial outfitters use them too.

Thanks,
I will keep this on my list of top candidates for things for the CT.
It sure is simpler then a black tank setup.

Howdy All;

When I was an over the road driver there come times when emergencies
occur, best solution I came up with was to double bag a 5 gal. bucket
(convenient height), with 13 gallon trash bags. When you're done just
tie the bag off and dispose of in the next dumpster. I think they make
seats for the 5 gal. buckets, if not then a router and a wooden seat from
Wal-Mart should do the trick.
