How much did you pay just for your trailer?

Postby EddiePA78 » Sun Jan 05, 2014 8:34 pm

I'm looking to buy a 7 x14 enclosed trailer or at very least 7x12. I also need extra head room because I'm 6'3 and need room for ceiling insulation.

Money is extremely tight for me and will be living out of one of these for a couple years probably starting this summer. Can I get a good one for under $4,000 with barn doors and a side door? I live in PA.

I purchased my trailer in 2008 from the original owner that purchased it new in 2007. Original retail for my 7-14 v nose with 6.6 ceiling, RV side door, and ramp rear was right at $8500. I got it for $3500 since the owner was in bad need of cash with the economy taking a nose dive and him being tied to the construction industry. You should have no problem finding used for $3500. Many new ones can be had for that amount also. Look at EBay and all the trailers made in Georgia.

I paid $2k for a 7 yr old 7x7x16 CT with ramp & CT door. I got lucky. I have seen some nice one for under what your talking. They may not be top of the line but they will fully function for many years.

Good luck,
Earnest
Dadgum it! I cut that board 5 times and it's still too short!

I like "http://www.searchtempest.com/" for searching Craiglist.
Just fill in "Cargo Trailer" and the distance you are willing to travel. From VA I reach out to PA, WV, NC and NJ.
Just keep looking and you may come across what you want.

Paid $2,000 (SF bay area prices) for my 6x12 tandem. The guy (Mr. Richard Richington) wanted $3,000 but the tires were old, the surge brakes were full of water and there was a hole in the floor. I said $2k and no more. All else was in good shape (I bought it after a big rain so I knew it didn't leak), so I converted to electric brakes and replaced the tires after a year.

I bought a 6 X 10 and a 7 X 16 at the same time. By buying two trailers I was able to get the dealer to do a little "dealing". I ended up paying $3750 for the 7 X 16 (not including TT&L).

Three things men always lie about .....

The price they paid for a car, what they got when they sold it & the MPG it got
One more - how well their trailer insulation works !!

But you can get a junk 7 x 16 NEW for $3,500 or quality trailer for $7,000
& you can even convince yourself that the $3,500 one is better........
Sooner or later you may even find one almost free somewhere
& If you spend $5,000 in effort it may even be TOTALLY FREE !!

PS EDDIE

Don't plan on living in the cheap one in PA winter time - especially if it has a metal frame... :frightened:
I hear it gets really ice cold over there in PA winters.

PS2. If you gonna live in PA in the winter then I would say smaller is always way better ,
because it takes less insulation in a smaller space,
requires less heat to keep warm, less cooling to keep cool etc.
a lower trailer also requires less gas while towing.

Appreciate the input. I planned on insulating the whole thing with r13 rigid foam will cost me roughly $500. If I'm going to live in it I need to be able to stand up without issues. With a lower headroom and leaning over all the time will get real old real fast. Not too concerned about gas my truck already gets 10mpg as it is and I won't be moving the trailer often.

I'm looking for used national well known brands like Haulmark,Wells Cargo, Car mate,Pace etc.

I love my trailer and made it very livable for me. In order to make it livable it cost an additional $11-12K. For your intended purpose it sounds like you would be much better off buying a nice used TT for less than half the cost of what even a cheap converted cargo trailer is going to cost you to build I see decent 30+ foot TT's on Craigslist everyday for $3-5K that will be much more comfortable to live in.

An additional 12k to make it livable? wow are you walking on gold floors?

I can certainly make mine livable for not even a quarter of that price for a 7x14 under 100 sq. ft.

I don't want to buy a travel trailer mainly because I want to be stealth. I'm a contractor so if I have a big job I can park it in a walmart or other place without having issues of people thinking I'm living in my trailer. Plus those travel trailers don't have r13 insulation in them and they won't be laid out the way I want it.

Not gold floors, but expensive and very durable vinyl squares since mine is built as a toyhauler. Water tanks, water heater, heat, A/c, electrical, Tv, Stereo, microwave, toilet, wall covering, ceiling covering, lighting, awning, power converter, inverter, batteries, and on and on. This is just scratching the surface of what is needed to be ( comfortable liveable). It adds up very fast and I bought many of my RV components for pennies on the dollar off EBay when many RV manufacturers went tits up in 2007-2008 due to the economy.

Hey Eddie

Tnriverlover he is a old cheapskate - tightwad
But he's 200% right

I got over $30k into my 7 x 18 CarMate from 2013.
Mine has zero windows - I can park in your driveway , nobody knows !!

PS if your in PA I would ask dealers to look for a old wood frame CarMate trailer
Much easier to insulate - just leave the old plywood walls up & put in 2" foam - then another 3/8 plywood.
On the floor use Dow Blue board - then plywood.
Don't worry about the height & bending over -95% your gonna be laying or sitting down.
Less space = less heat

ALSO - the chance you find a 6 .5 trailer is almost ZIP - as 95% are shorter- generally only contractor
Trailers are taller like 6.5 to 7.5 and they won't sell theirs - unless going broke, it's the last thing to go
As they might wanna live in it too !!

I read your thread about your trailer it is over the top obviously at 30k. Not trying to sound like a know it all but again I don't need anything even remotely close to 30k for mine. It depends on how you want to use your trailer. If you already live in luxury then I guess you want to travel in luxury. For me I just need a warm safe place to crash. Ill have heat, water, tv and solar. $100+ indoor propane heater $130 instant hot water heater $60 12v water pump $200 water tank see where this is going? nowhere near 5 figure prices to live in. I have a whole spreadsheet I'm working on.

Here is a perfect trailer I found about 30 mins from me. 6'6" interior height. http://philadelphia.craigslist.org/for/4262296520.html

I have a 7x16 cargo trailer/ toy hauler I built and a 30ft toy hauler and I can't imagine living in either one, I like the smaller trailer for weekends but after a week I am climbing the walls for more room.
I think it's rare to find a used trailer that is 6.1/2 or taller so I ordered mine and I paid 5000.00 in 2010 but I did have it built 7ft tall and I had a window and the rv screen door put in and also the rear stabilizer jacks all really worth the money, I spent 400.00 on the aluminum rims and I bought RV decals to dress it up some.
I did spend a lot making the inside look and feel like a mancave so the time I did spend in it I would be more comfortable, if I were to do it again I would like to have a 7x20 ft and a nicer bathroom set up with holding tanks.
I have thought about doing a remodel and adding a better bathroom and toilet with holding tanks but I just don't want to spend the money or the time to make it a little nicer than what I have now.
The thing about doing it yourself is you can make it as bare bones and simple as you want, and know how to fix it if something goes wrong.
