6x12 trailer manufacturer who will place the wheels inboard

As the title suggests, I am looking for 6x12 cargo trailer with wheels inboard. I want to keep my trailer footprint the same as my truck (6'). All of the companies I've asked about state "No, for safety" (to keep from tipping). I could use a 5x (wheel width at 6') but it cuts the amount of space inside.

Any suggestions??

Check out MtnDon's forum topic. He just received his order for a 6 x 12 with the wheels partially in the trailer.

ahhhhhh....thank you Jerry.
Truth is I try to read them all even many of the ones outside or our Cargo Trailer Conversions section. Many of our regular contributors here also post some good stuff there, especially on electrical work which to me is the most technical/cruicial area where it is a must to do it right. I have gone back to posts from 04 and 05 and picked up some great inputs there,

Building a frame to fit the wheels inboard is easy enough, but it does require an interruption or a change in the way things are done. I believe that is partly the reason most manufacturers will not make a narrow axle version of anything except their widest models. Somebody has to make a new set of drawings, some new calculations. If they are busy enough with making the usual off the shelf trailer they may be thinking, 'why make life more complicated?' Most dealers I talked to just said, Nobody does that... I've never seen that.... or a variation on that thought.

MtnDon,

What is the wheel footprint for yours?? after reviewing your posts, it appears your wheels are inboard "all the way"....What is the clearance inside (the trailer, between the wheel wells)??

Thanks

Some measurements.

The fenders protrude 2.25" from the exterior trailer wall. With a straightedge laid across the fender opening there is 0.5" from that fender edge line to the widest part of the tire sidewall. Tires are ST205/75R15's. So the wheels are not quite all the way inside. I like the way they are positioned. The hint of a fender looks better than a slab side would, IMO.

Inside the distance between the metal wheel boxes is 56.25". The boxes measure 11.6 inches in height above the 3/4: plywood floor. The boxes are 36 inches long.

wtcreaux,

I just came across this site which is advertising narrow axles for 6' CT's

http://www.trailershowroom.com/master_e ... ptions.htm

I just have not figured out what brand this is for. That in itself is a little concerning to me.

Hope this is of help to you.

Bob, the trailershowroom does not build trailers themselves. It seems to me they are simply a website. It is nice to be able to go through the different options and price a trailer. They contract with different manufacturers in different locations. The buyer picks the trailer up where it is built.

The McGregor TX location is Lark United as is the Douglas, GA location. Waco, TX is Cargo Mate. I think the Elkhart, IN mfg is Continetal... and the aluminum trailers are from Rance in Elkhart. The Oregon location is Cargo Mate.

That is interesting Don. Last night when I looked at their site, I saw that the model numbers were the same as were Continental and the manufacturing locations where also the same. I suspected that their trailers were built in the same plants but with just a different name on them. I also noticed that you cannot go anywhere to look at one; rather you order and go to the manufacturing plant (one of the four locations you mentioned) to pick up the trailer. Hmmmm, I wonder what name is on the trailer? Not "Enclosed Trailer" I presume.

I do not know if I will expend the energy required to find out more unless I just happen to come across a Continental. I have not heard much about them. The other problem for me is that the locations are far enough away from me (Indiana and GA being the closest) that I could not see myself trying for a trip to visit their manufacturing process and final product.

Does it sound like I am be very particular? Well I am. Just part of my manufacturing background I guess.
