extra height trailer pros and cons

I have the option of getting more height in my legend trailer.Any opinions on weather it's worth it when it comes to MPG?? Thanks!

I too had that same question and was convinced that the extra height (6 inches more to give me a total of 76" in the CT I am looking at) is worth the cost to buy and that if I manage my driving speeds, will not hurt me that much in the mpg department.

I also plan on insulating the floor which might take another 1 to 1 1/2 in away from the available height which is another reason for me wanting the added height. I can get 3 in increments, but the cost is the same as for the 6 inches.

Also try the search box above for keywords about added heights and you will find more comments made by others. This is a great feature.

According to this Forum its a MORTAL SIN to have a CT in which your head, or the head of your tallest friend will touch the ceiling.....

NOTHING is more important then Headroom, its #1 on the LIST



I have come to this Scientific conclusion because people would rater have their BUTTS FREEZE OFF in -40F
vs. loosing even 1/2" installing floor insulation, if their head touches the ceiling and they have to bend over.

Speaking for myself and my wife, neither of us see the point of spending the money and taking the time to build / customize a trailer that is taller than a teardrop but not tall enough to stand upright inside. We have spent countless years crawling in and out of small tents, pickup beds with toppers, and the like. We have also had small factory made "eggs" than we had to hunch over inside, as well as two we could stand erect inside. If you've looked at our current project you know what we are happiest with. YMMV.

If the height costs us a mpg penalty it won't be all that much more compared to a trailer with 6 foot interior height, which is more or less standard in its class.


I do have to measure the height and write it on a card that will be pasted within view of the drivers position in the TV. :) Don't want to make a youtube appearance in conjunction with a low bridge.

Spend the extra money and sacrifice the MPG, you'll thank yourself when you get up at 4:00 am to go to the bathroom and not hit your head!!!! :D

You will be very happy about getting the extra height. Mine is 6'6" and I would not have it any other way even though I am only 5' 10" myself. You just don't feel cramped and when your 6' 4" buddy happens to stop by and visit he will also appreciate it.

Mine is 7' tall & We love the extra height. We can maneuver inside easily, I have more room for storage and my wife doesn't feel claustrophobic in it. No one has given me grief over the extra height at all. My mpg is so much better than pulling my old 5th wheel or hauling that big cabover that all I see is improved mpg. Its all in the perspective that your looking at it from. If you want the height & can pull it safely, GO FOR IT!! Enjoy your build.

Mine is 6'4 and I wouldn't want it any other way. I would imagine the only significant mpg concern would be a v-nose front vs flat front. Most all CTs are taller than their tow rig anyhow. Glad to here you went for it! :thumbsup:

Drag force in fluids is proportional to the area. So it's a straight line. Not a significant factor.

Your tv will be. Fuel consumption's relationship to horsepower used is roughly cubed. 2hp use 8 units of fuel, 3 use 27 etc. it a steep exponential curve.

To make a significant difference in your fuel consumption use less horses: be conscious when pulling away, avoid harsh acceleration and keep at or below 55mph.

If definitely go with the advice of building taller.

I needed the extra height to get a lifted golf cart inside and the factory charged the same for 6inches as a foot so I went with 7ft and I am glad I did, I wanted something that looked like a factory built toyhauler without the retail price.
I didn't build my trailer to camp in as much as I was going to sporting clay tournaments and I knew I was going to spend a lot of time inside esp in the summer when I wanted to be inside a air conditioned space or when it was cold out I would be inside and warm.
I wanted the comforts and the inside and the head height is part of that.
The mpg doesn't matter that much to me I have a 2500 Silverado PU , I seam to get the same if I go 55 as 65 but at 75 it does drop a little.

You can use extra height for storage of dry goods too. Bedding, blankets, pillows... :D

One thing to consider with extra height is he height of you garage/shed door. :)
