A terrible camping tragedy has recently happened and a father and son have died from carbon monoxide poisoning. http://www.ksl.com/?sid=28763708&nid=14 ... featured-1

I know that there are many of you that use unvented heaters. Please be careful, get a good CO detector, check its batteries often, have lots of ventilation, and don't sleep with it on. Even just using one to warm up with while you are in bed has the danger of you drifting off to sleep.

I know that you are all big responsible adults, but sometimes we all need reminders.

I have had first hand experience with CO poisoning. I was retrofitting a 1963 VW Beetle back in the 70's and was driving it to work everyday.
I was getting sick as the days went on and went to my plant nurse who quickly diagnosed me as suffering from CO poisoning. I then realized it was coming from a defective heating system in the Beelte. For those who remember those cars, you will recall it had a system that blew air around the exhaust manifold pipes (or something like that) and then into the cab. I had a leaker and was getting those nasty but odorless fumes into the cab of the car. Funny, but I do not remember smelling the typical exhaust fumes.

I stopped driving it until the heat system was properly fixed and started to feel better again. CO poisoning can sneak up on your and you might not notice it until it is too late.

Becarefull with this stuff.

Bob it works best if you put the hose from the exhaust into the drivers side window.....
but WE HAVE SOME BETTER GREMAN GAS !! Zyklon B - works real fast

I had Diesel poisoning once, had to barf bile every 15 minutes for 12 hours .....
now thats what I would use for Texas prison executions.....
but make it last for 48 hours min
the current 3 drugs work way tooooo FAST !!
Crime would drop real fast ...if you could see that on Prison TV

A timely warning via an awful tragedy. Thanks for the reminder.
We need to be vigilent to the dangers that the need for staying warm in a small airspace can carry. I have a catalytic heater in my trailer that in proper running order does not generate CO1 gas, never the less it will still deplete oxygen if it does not get a supply from a vent. Even so it is after all, a propane appliance and unlikely as it may be, one that could potentially leak from a failed connection, appliance, or pipe, just as the fridge and stove could.
For this reason I have both ceiling and floor vents open at night (propane is heavier than air, combustion gases lighter) and I always activate an indusatrial grade Honeywell four gas detector at night. It monitors O2 level, H2SO, CO, and LEL (fuel) and it makes a hellacious noise should the batteries become weak. Besides this a tug on an easily reached chain lets me unlatch the ramp door so it can be pushed open, making an immediate 5.5' x 6' opening in a 6' x 10' trailer.
And still take nothing for granted.

Carbon Monoxide poisoning...while driving a VW Beetle...hmmm? I guess that now I have another reason/excuse/alibi for all those crazy/reckless/illegal/(should I go on?) things I did back in the day, while driving various Beetles from 1971 to 1976? Then I'll have to consider finding reasons for my illogical actions while driving a Volvo until 1981. At that point I got a Ford; still apparently suffering from residual CO poisoning, I bet! Maybe the dain bramage was permanent....

Never thought of it that. After 3 early model Bugs, there might be a connection between them and what is now.
