My 5x9 conversion

Postby AZKayaker » Sun Jun 08, 2014 7:35 am

Finally found the basis for my rectangular teardrop or "SquareDrop" conversion. It's a 2005 5x9 Mighty Mover with a lift back door. I had been looking for a used 5x10 or 5x12, but wasn't having much luck. This will be a pretty basic project, with a bunk, porta-potty, 2 or 3 windows, a roof escape hatch (so I can stand up), a rear galley and maybe a fantastic fan. I will be posting many questions, as I have never tackled anything like this before.

Welcome. I am especially interested in your "escape hatch" How wide is the one you will put in, and how much of a curve is in your ct roof? I have thought about installing one, but my roof has quite a bit of curve to it. Not sure if it will work on my curve. Don't know if anyone has done it. Thanks!

Here's my gallery with a few pics of the new to me 5x9 ct.

The escape hatch that I am planning on using is the Heng's 15x22". My roof is flat.

If your windows are going to be going through that paint job I hope they are aluminum framed, multi paned, and dome shaped... like the machine gun mounts on those old planes :)

I like the style of the trailer. I haven't seen a lift gate like that before. Cool.

Either you are very short or that is not the bunk you intend to use across the 5' front of the trailer!

Nice graphics and trailer! Instead of the fantastic fan, I went with Maax Air, 10 speeds and less power useage then the fantastic fan low speed still keeps the air moving and uses little power..

Finally got around to ordering my Heng's escape hatch/sunroof/vent. The best deal I could find was on Ebay at $89.95 for the 15x22" with free S&H. http://www.ebay.com/itm/321171151191

Image

The bed/couch platform is in and the shelving for the galley only needs to be bolted in. I'll hang the drop-down dining table today or tomorrow. The 14x16" window for my side door is on it's way and well as a cam lock for the door.

Dropped just over $400 so far. Have $600 left in my budget for another window, insulation, paneling, etc.

I'll post photos soon.

Test fitting a 9X9 vent in the rear lift door. It fits perfectly between the studs in the door. It will give some light and ventilation and was less than 1/4 the price of a small window.
