rigging for LEDs ?

Postby hankaye » Thu Jul 17, 2014 3:04 pm

Howdy All;

What is required to convert regular 12vdc to something that is compatible with
these LED lights that everyone is all so excited about. Some pictures or links will
be greatly appreciated. I tried looking through the search (the google one in the header),
to no avail, as most folks tend to show off their new found knowledge by using
the tech-no- babble the just learned and that doesn't help anyone that can't understand
it to begin with.
Please bear in mind, a'll are dealin' with someone that has shied away
from electricity since 1950 when he stuck a damp thumb in a round screw-in
electric baseboard outlet ...
Thanks for ya'll's thoughts.

Hank, try searching the box right above the postings for each "Topic" section.

Here is the one from the Cargo Trailer section

search.php?keywords=Led&fid%5B0%5D=30
using just "led" in the search box.

And here are some links from the "Electrical Secrets" section.
search.php?keywords=Led&fid%5B0%5D=30

See if this helps.
Bob

I can't recommend http://oznium.com enough!

All plug and play for 12 volt

Super guys to deal with too :)

I run

http://www.oznium.com/thin-waterproof-ribbon

For my main lights in warm white

http://www.oznium.com/high-intensity-led-floodlight

Also these floods in warm white for accent lighting

Yep, warm white is the way to go!

lrrowe, Howdy;

I've already been through about 10 or so pages of the search results before
I posed the question.
Humans are funny critters, once they learn new 'things' and the new terms that go along
with the new found knowledge they seldom have the ability to describe or convey the same
thoughts in words that made sense to them before they 'learned the language', now they
utilize the new found terms and become just as unintelligible as the folks that they had a
hard time understanding.

Are there 'things' that need to be put into the system (12vdc), that allow the lights to light
without burning them (and my CT), down? Are there different ways to install an LED system?
Where the *%#@ do ya find this stuff? Has anyone done a Step-by-step about this stuff?
Basic stuff like that. Mostly the links talk about I did this or that ... simply those words ...
nothing that truly shows the how's of doing the installs. For the electrically challenged it's very frustrating.

Thanks for attempting to help, it is truly appericated.

Sorry Hank,

My fault for having misunderstood your real question.

The LED Strip Lights I use in my teardrop and in my standie connect directly across the 12 VDC supply. No adapter or anything else is required. Google LED strip lights to find a large assortment in various colors.

If you buy LED bulbs, not Light Emitting Diodes, they will usually include the necessary current limiting resistor to allow them to operate directly across a DC source. The voltage of that DC supply is generally specified at purchase.

Bare Light Emitting Diodes require a current limiting resistor in series, but unless you are shopping at an electronics components supplier, its unlikely you'll encounter these.

GuitarPhotog, Howdy;

Not really looking for the strip or rope lights, looking for overhead lights
for the CT I'm fixing to convert. Something like these in Hiflyer's post
http://www.oznium.com/high-intensity-led-floodlight
Can these be wired directly into the 12vdc system??? If so, thenthe only
problem I see may or may not be the temp. of the unit mentioned on the
tech sheet http://www.oznium.com/high-intensity-le ... light/tech
especially if you are mounting it in a ceiling type of environment with close
clearances and insulation ...

I went with the strips for more even lighting thruought the trailer. I don't like intense light. And on a pwm dimmer it's awesome to run them at ~10% when it's real dArk out.

The floods are awesome for accents, but I wanted more even lighting.

They are all 12v plug and play from oznium :)

The next suggestion is anderson powerpoles to connect everything. They rock.

Hank: Do you already have regular old bulb lights in the trailer? Is so, you can get LED light boards that replace those bulbs, and there you have it. If you're doing the wiring and all that stuff, then I guess you wire it just like you would for non-LED lights because in mine, I just replaced the regular 12 volt light bulbs with LED boards. Got mine from superbrightleds.com.

Oznium seems to be a bit on the expensive side for some of there items. I'll add another vote for http://www.SuperbrightLEDS.com. I order a ton of stuff from http://www.powerwerx.com too.

Gonefishin, Howdy;

Thanks for the most basic answer yet. :thumbsup:
I'm guessing that light 'boards' are what we used to
call lighting fixtures???
I've always been linguistically challenged.

OK this doses not answer your question but I bought something similar to these at lowes
I have the nice brass dimable led lights but I like these better they have there own AA battery and I use them all the time and have yet to change the battery.
these have a magnet you can stick them to metal but I I also just lay them around in different places and if I need to go outside at night I just grab one, great to have next to the bed when I need to get up at night.ect , I like them so much I am going to buy more.

Possibly, but I've not had a bad LED yet and they answer questions very quickly. That works for me :)

And I have a ton of led's around ;)
