Window question on attaching

Postby TFBruin » Fri Jul 18, 2014 10:12 am

Tried searching can't find an answer. I just got my windows and installed the first one last night. I took a lot of time as this was the first hole I cut into my new trailer.

My windows are 14" x 21" to fit between the studs. I have 4 of them for my 7x16 vnose.

I have a couple of questions, first is it ok to just attach them with the metal screws that go through the trim ring and then into the back side of the window frame? Do I need to drill all the way through the frame so that they are mounted with a bolt that goes all the way trough the frame and trim ring? I don't want the to work their way loose and fall out if the threads stripe.

Second, on the door side, would you suggest putting a window in the door or in the side next to the door?

Lastly the windows came with a rubber seal attached. Is this sufficient or do I need to use some silicone sealant?

If you are screwing into solid wood like 1 / 2 inch plywood or better then screws would be enough. If you have 1/4 inch skin, foam, 1/4 inch skin, sandwich, then I would want the bolts all the way through.

I don't like rubber gaskets on window seals. I would rather have silicone window sealant, or I used butyl tape for mine.

Most have window through the door. Window beside the door works too.

I'm pretty impressed with the security of a cargo trailer. After looking at mine I decided not to put a window in the door as it looked too easy to break the window and reach inside and open the door.I am opting for a large door viewer instead. None of my windows will be wider than 14".

I got 3 of the windows in and installed a roof vent, fantastic fan. I had the same thoughts on someone breaking a window and opening the door. I was told if someone wants in they are getting in. So not sure what I want to do. That's way I held off on putting in the 4th window until I decide.

I agree with if they want in, they'll get in. When I installed a window in my door, I also installed a cam bar lock and armored padlock. Each bolt has a tack weld, so they can't be removed if the glass is broken.

I left the original outside bar lock on in addition to installing a key lock on the door, they can break the door window but they cant get in..i find the door window the handiest, as i can reach in and put and get stuff on the counter with the window open without opening the door..also turn the lights on and off as my switches are on the left inside right next to the door frame...just my 2c..
