Electrical Question..

Postby mlowry7 » Wed Jul 23, 2014 11:14 am

Just curious, anything wrong with using extension cords and plugs strips or should I put a breaker box with lifeline, and how hard is that to do? I won't need much. Just a few small lights, small fans, etc.

This is all I use a contractors 15amp power pole strip about 50.00 from lowes has a15 ft heavy cord long enough to go down and through the floor and attached to the trailer tounge.
simple and works great.

It would be a lot safer to install the correct breaker box with a cord going outside to connect to. Also you need to install a bonding wire from the electrical service to the frame of the trailer. It has happened recently that a young child was killed by this not being properly installed.

the smart play might be to plan ahead and at least create the space for a panel and give yourself access for later.

I too dont use much in the way of power but I have it if i want it, and if i sell mine it might be a deal breaker for the next guy...

my two cents.

Yes that was just one of the stories I have read. Sorry for being a licensed electrician who takes electrical wiring seriously. And to that voltage tester you found, I have had a few of them over the years. They fail more times than you would like to know. Why would you want to take the risk for a few extra bucks? In the NEC (NFPA 70) there is a large section just for RV and trailers, it is there for a reason.
