Unless you're tongue heavy and your headlamps are pointing skyward you probably don't "need" one but it is a nice-to-have on any trailer. You buy the kit matched to your tongue weight. You fine tune them by changing the number of links between the torsion bar and the trailer tongue but you still want to pick one that is in the ballpark, don't buy a 2000# kit if your tongue weight is really only 700#. They usually come with 2-5/16 balls so you may need a bushing to reduce the size of the ball mounting hole if your trailer uses a 2" ball.

I agree with that, and constantly have to explain why I really depend on them. A personal preference, but it makes me more confident that my trailer isn't going to come off the ball. On my big trailers, I use it to help carry large loads, and on the little trailer, it imparts a load to the tongue. I adapted the one I use for my big trailers, to work on my TTT, by using only one spring bar, instead of two (my trailer has a single drawbar, 3" square tubing x .1875 thick). Here is a link to a discussion of why I trust them:http://www.tnttt.com/viewtopic.php?f=35&t=57723&hilit=+weight+distribution As a coincidental thing, I made a post today on the Expedition Portal forum, concerning the problem using a wd hitch would incur offroad (my future plans):http://www.expeditionportal.com/forum/threads/130284-my-first-build-4x8-heavy-weight-with-generator-A-C-inside-now-to-begin-using-it!?p=1645827#post1645827. You didn't state which year model 1/2 ton Silverado, whether big or small engine, gear ratio, or planned trailer weight...all very important to determine whether there's a "must have" situation for choosing to use a WD hitch. I just choose to use one in any situation I can (except offroad).

We have the Anderson Hitch. Perfect for our 16 foot cargo/toy hauler. We no longer sway when passing trucks with our short WB Durango.
