Pace American CT mystery wire

Postby KAD » Mon Sep 01, 2014 9:04 am

Got a question for any Pace American owners out there. (Or anyone with knowledge of their interior wiring).

Background info:
I've got a 2006 PA Cargo Sport trailer (This is an original, not one from the company that bought them after the bankruptcy).
It has a 7 wire vehicle hookup, electric brakes & a switched interior light.
There is a plastic wiring box set into the front wall.

The issue:
Inside the wiring box, beyond the expected wiring for the running & tail lights, is a mystery wire. It's dark grey and connected to the Black 12v+ wire from the harness (along with the wire for the overhead light). There is nothing else in the trailer that needs a 12v+ feed that I am aware of and, as it runs behind the plywood walls, I can't figure out what it's attached to.

It's not the Aux from the harness, as that is also there, in Yellow and connected to nothing (capped).

Anyone have any ideas what this grey wire might be attached to or intended for?

Just a guess. Do you have a breakaway kit on your trailer (battery for activating your electric brakes if your trailer becomes disconnected)?

I do indeed have one. I think (having had to replace the plastic box the battery/charger live in on it last year) that all its connections are tapped into the harness out on the tongue. But it's a factory install and that's definitely an idea to check. Thank you.

KAD, Howdy;

Here's some "Generalized" information,
http://www.myrv.us/electric/Pg/trailer.htm
Your Gray wire is probably an addition that a previous owner had installed and
you may have to ask them what it was for... or you could just remove it and
go from there...

Hank,
Thanks, but I ordered the trailer custom from the factory, it's never had any owners but me. The wire is a factory installed one but is not part of the traditional trailer wiring harness.

Just a thought, a lot of trailers do not have the top ID/Clearance lights at the front and rear so,
perhaps the factory used the gray wire to power them ... ? Reckon you won't know till you pull
the walls down to insulate or decide to chase the wire ... When you do figure it out please let us know.

It MAY be a wire that goes to a small Battery as a Brake away switch. These small batteries are used to lock up the brakes in case the trailer separates from the tow vehicle.

But a few questions first.

Does the trailer already have a Battery? (large or small)

Does it have a Break away switch on the tongue? (yes Prev answered)

And does the trailer have brakes?

If your trailer has brakes and does not have a battery this MAY be the hot wire for the breakaway.

Happy Trails

If he didn't have a battery and had brakes then the Blue wire would be the brake wire just like in a regular RV ...
Wiring Code 7 way Trailer End
# Color Gage Circuit Function connector interior
1 white 10 common ground [7 way connector]
2 blue 12 electric brake
3 green 14 tail/running lights
4 black 10 battery charge (+)
5 red 14 left turn/stop
6 brown 14 right turn/stop
7 yellow 14 auxiliary/back up
NOTE: #7 is the center terminal and currently is most commonly used for backup lights.

Before you go ripping things apart, test the wire against the chassis with a multimeter for continuity. If you don't get continuity, they try hitting it with some 12v and see if any lights come on. Do this at your own risk...I take no blame if your trailer catches on fire. I'd do it on mine, but if I see a wire that I don't know what it goes to, and everything is working, I just leave it alone. Good luck!
