sharp v nose / soft v nose

Postby Tomkat197 » Thu Oct 09, 2014 9:01 am

Not sure if I ever posted a intro. We are retired and have traveled the lower 48 states on a motorcycle sometimes pulling a small pop up other times just tent camping. In our 60's now so decided to stay drier and drive with ac.We are about to order a diamond 7x16 to build a camper/toyhauler.On their website they list a sharp V nose, a soft V nos and a flat nose.We want a V nose but not sure what a soft V nose looks like, anyone have a pic.

I don't have a pic of the soft v-nose from Diamond Cargo, but have seen other manufacturers. Picture a softer, more round bullet nose, that protrudes out only about 1/2 as much over the tongue as a sharp v-nose.

It really boils down to personal choice and plans for your layout. A flat nose gives the most tongue space (propane tanks, batteries, etc) - but you sacrifice interior space. If you have other plans for batteries, etc in the interior, a sharp v-nose gives you more interior space. The soft v-nose is a compromise between the two.

I see many arguments for fuel economy, etc on flat vs. v-nose but that wouldn't be a factor for me. I would choose the style that best fit my intended layout and design. Just my .02.

I had the same dilemma. I searched all I could for supporting data, even asked the manufacturers and no one had any good information for me.
I hear that a V Nose will not give you a slipper air stream, I hear that it will. I think those who have it, like it and believe in it. I can tell you from very a very recent experience that a flat nose will act like a sail. It did not hurt my getting up to and maintaining speed, but it did make a dent in my mpg. But still I have no regrets after buying it. I now believe speed will make the bigger difference.

I finally decided on a flat nose because of manufacture's line up and because I realized it would give me more floor footage, make it easier to convert the inside and would provide for more options on the tongue. At least for me it would.

So I believe in the approach that one should then just go with what works better for he/she.

The v shape helps a small amount with drag, however the sharp corner at the sides of the trailer causes the most drag. There was a guy who made a car hauler that went through a bunch of wind tunnel work. His design had a sharp V that had a few more facets as it merged into the sides to round off the corners. The trailer was welded aluminum sheets, and very expensive.
Realy the best shape would be a V nose that flowed back into the sides like a boat bow, I don't know any makes like that.
