Rocky5000100's 7x12 Toy Hauler Build

Postby Rocky5000100 » Tue Feb 24, 2015 9:26 am

Hi all! I finally bought my trailer to convert to a Toy Hauler.

A little background: I do track days and racing in Wisconsin and Illinois (sometimes Minnesota and Indiana too). I've been doing these for 3 seasons now, and have been using an open trailer, and I usually sleep in my 4runner or a tent. However, this is a pain, and so it unloading everything after a long weekend at the track. So I started researching putting a bed in an enclosed trailer, and stumbled upon this site, and all the really cool builds. One that I drew most inspiration from is pvangels, http://tnttt.com/viewtopic.php?f=42&t=52284

So I decided to buy an enclosed trailer. I started researching what others with 3rd gen 4runners were towing, and decided a 7x12 would work. I knew I wanted extra height because I'm 6'3"

I ended up buying this 7x12 last night:
-Stealth Titan 7x12
-Extra 6 Inches of height (6'6" interior)
-3/8 Plywood walls
-Ramp door
-RV latch on side door

One thing I didn't count on is it has a beavertail, where the last few feet on the rear slant down slightly. This means my bed supports will have to be cut to fit, and my trailer restraint system may have to be reversed.

It looks much taller in this pic haha

I've also been using tinkercad to come up with interior plans. Some things it will have:
-Fold up Twin bed with storage underneath
-Fold down bench
-Pit bull trailer restraint
-60" wide base cabinet with sink and 12v water hookup
-30"x18"x12" upper cabinets
-12v led lights
-110AC
-Window AC
-Maybe a microwave
-Fold down bench
-Insulation

Here's what it will look like filled. I will adjust the motorcycle position based on how I'm doing for tongue weight.

It should be a fun build that will take me probably through May, when the track season starts.

Nice, I wish I had computer skills to draw those. My trailer size is similar mines 6" higher. My bike is dual sport, my tow is also similar- Jeep. I'll keep checking on your build for ideas.

Ha I don't have the drawing skills either. Tinkercad.com is a very easy to use website. Just general shapes that you move around. I imported the motorcycle from someone else's drawing.

I see you got an aluminum. Very nice!

Love the planning process...

My trailer is almost complete, and while I don't race any longer, the trailer is built specifically to haul the dual sport, as my wife is not real fond of camping in a tent in grizzly country. We wills still camp, but the CT will become our normal sleeping arrangement.

Curious why a window AC unit instead of an RV roof unit? Window units are cheaper, but consume space, which is a premium IMHO in a CT conversion. I'm not sure about an AC unit on my CT yet, but wired the vent for one just in case.

I am almost finished, but surprised at how much time some of the things took to complete. Example: two windows were over 10 man hours. Pretty easy for folks to run out of steam on a nice build...

Rocky,
Thank-you
I only use my cell phone for most of my internet. So I'm not able to use that site unless I hit library.

Prof,
For me I didn't want roof top because mine was not ordered so no support. And because it's a 7' it just fits in my pole barn. Id do an axle flip and 16" wheels if it would still fit in barn.
And window won't work for me because I'm not cutting a stud and my trailer is on 16's. I got a portable to try.

I got some towing mirrors from Etrailer.com since I couldn't see behind the trailer at all on the way home lol.

The reviews for these were good, and the videos show them going on pretty quickly after initial setup.

Tomorrow I will be going to Menards to get insulation and cabinets since they're on sale.

Hey guys, what are your thoughts on running wiring through conduit attached to the wall, vs running it behind the plywood walls? I think having it in the conduit would make it easier to troubleshoot and install, but would also be less clean looking. I'm torn.

check out the upper corners (wall-ceiling)....1" wire loom running along each side. In picture, tacked to the ceiling but the final will be along the upper wall.....

I will probably end up with both by the time I am done. I have a clean slate now and plan on putting some conduit in wall areas where I think I might make changes later. I am also making my floors, walls and ceiling removable so if I need to, I can get to areas to make changes. But the last and acceptable straw will be to have the conduit type installation on the outside of the walls.

Yes in fact we were the first motorcycle org to have a track day there and the first organization to race there. Awesome track! Here's our 2015 schedule, sorry its hard to find working on a website redesign:

1. April 18th/19th - Putnam Park Road Course
2. May 23rd/24th - Gateway Motorsports Park
3. June 13th/14th - Heartland Park Topeka (This date depends on the track's business status.)
4. July 18th/19th - Hallett Motor Racing Circuit (This will be shared with their in-house Motorcycle Lapping Day/MLD. We are still ironing out the details, but the format will be more or less the same as you're used to at our events.)
5. September 19th/20th - Gateway Motorsports Park
6. October 17th/18th - NCM Motorsports Park

Thanks guys. I think I'm going to go with conduit this time for simplicity and troubleshooting in the future.

Thanks for that schedule sdiver. I'd be happy to make a farther trip if I get this done so I can camp out easy :)

I got a good bit done today. First it started with a trip to Menards and I got:
-9 1" R5 Insulation boards
-60" base cabinet
-2 30x18x12 upper cabinets

Image
I started pulling off the luan paneling that covers the gaps in between the plywood, cracking a few of them, so I may have to buy some new pieces when it comes time to button it back up.

Then I took off the plywood, which was easy because it was self-tapping screws. When I got to the rearmost panel, part of it was under a metal piece. At first I thought it was a torx bit, then I realized it was 8-sided. Some research told me it's something really only trailer manufacturers use, and a square bit will work just fine. So I got a square bit and sure enough it came right off.

All done for today. Tomorrow I'll do the front.

Oh and bonus! I found out I already have stabilizer jacks in the rear! I thought I was going to have to buy them.
