Since a search yielded no answers, lets poll brain trust.
Does anyone know or have done a pop out bed addition to a cargo trailer?
Im just bought a 7x12 v nose (American Hauler Night Hawk) and would like to have some extra room for out teenage daughter other than a tent. So out of curiosity what is the cost in doing this?
Thanks
:wine:

Good find, I was always wondering what they cost, in my case I would need to add at least 2 - 5th wheel Jacks on the outside.

Were you planning a DIY or buying a bolt-on kit? Seems to me, a DIY in the fold-out tent fashion wouldn't be too bad. The biggest difficulty would be to get the tent part sewn. If you live near any waterways, go down to the marina and ask them who does replacement boat canopies. They should be able to sew up what your looking for if you go that route.

However, you have a couple other things to consider.
1) Most cargo trailers have metal "studs" every 16 or 24 inches. You would need to weld in framework to reinforce the vertical strength you are losing by cutting some out for your pop-out.
2) You would need to be careful when cutting out the side, so that it could be used for the exterior of the door you will be making. This new door could hinge at the bottom and double as the sleeping platform.

With this arrangement, you're probably looking at some 1" square tubing for the door frame and door itself, some cable for support and then the canvas for the tent sides. Think about maybe 1/2" conduit for the tent framing that could fold flat onto the sleep surface while in transport. Then some Z channel and T channel for the door flange and frame, and then some gasket material.

In a cargo trailer, I personally wouldn't want a push-out option for beds, as you lose all that interior volume for cargo when it's pushed in while traveling.

Off the top of my head, if you are doing this DIY and can do the welding, you would probably be able to do this for about $200-$300 each, depending on how much the canopy maker wants for the custom work.

just my .02 cents

Thanks for the idea. I can Weld and do most other metal fabrication. The whole task sounds daunting and expensive. Oh, I'm smack dab in the middle if corn country Illinois. Lol.

What kind of doors do you have on the back(barn doors or ramp) maybe you could do something with that? Or use a wider standard side door with a fold out box?

Ramp rear door. Plan is to use it as a deck, then fold up at night. Maybe a rear slide out onto the ramp  .... Who knows

With a bigger standard side door. You could do a three panel fold out(bed platform, outside wall and roof)with truck tarp sides. Open door fold it out. When later or when not out with your daughter you can remove it and have a extra door(shower bay?). A standard trailer door should be fairly easy to but in.

I've never seen the door design. Dear daughter may end up in a tent [TENT] or on the floor.

For door design you would have to wing it. I would think a short support wall on the bottom of the door, a platform that hinges on the top of the support wall with the outside wall hinged on the end of the platform and the roof panel hinged on the top of the outside wall and the top of the door.
You would open the door drop the platform down.
The platform would unfold the wall and roof with it.
Then use a couple ratched straps or cable with eyes to support the outside end of the platform with the wall pulled out and the roof up
It should be able to fold back in with 4 live hinges(plastic strips that flex).

I know this doesn't answer your question directly, but hopefully will show you a possible alternate solution. I really liked the fold outside the wall tent bed idea too until I saw the cost.

We wanted to fit 4 kids in our 7 x 16, here's how we did it:
