I see a lot of folks using 2 x 2 's for framing for counters and cabinets. Great idea, I like it. Just wondering about joints. It looks like everyone uses simple butt joints, but I am sure there is more to it than that. I would worry about the 2 x 2 splitting if I ran a screw in it. All help and especially pictures are appreciated.

I used a Kregg jig and predrilled. I used this on 1x2 as well as 2x2 with wood glue on all joints. Half lap joints and even dados are all easy options depending on skill and resources and how good you are with measurements

I'm using the Kregg system also. I'm no carpenter or framer, but from what I can tell it feels pretty solid. I'll be taking a trip soon with all the solar, water, electric, and framing in place and open to see how it performs. I'll be driving from MD to FL, so i'll see if what I did holds up and if I should make changes before I do the finishing stuff.

Hope the above pictures helps...when I secured the horizontal 2x2s to the vertical 2x2s, I simply drilled thru the vertical 2x2 into the horizontal one - no predrilling. However, at the other end where I had to toenail the horizontal 2x2 to the vertical one, I predrilled so I wouldn't split the wood.

So I hope I'm not simplifying it too much, but at a T joint, I did not predrill; at a toenail joint, I did.

After 2+ years and 30 some odd thousand miles (not kms), no failures.



As far as cabinets are concerned, I used 1/2 plywood and simple butt joints (never seen, so no esthetic value in doing anything fancier).

Kreg screws have drill tip that helps minimize splitting. Their screws come in coarse and fine threads. One is for softwood. The other is for hardwood. My brain is failing me at the moment but I believe the coarse is for softwoods like used for framing.
