Time to swap in the winter sleeping bag . So tempting to just hook up and head out somewhere.

Modstock, Howdy;

Know what ya mean. Had to turn the furnace on night before last for the first time.
Had to protect water lines against a possible drop in temps below 32. chucklin'

I did it. Spontaneous trip to Yuba reservoir. Grabbed one of the good spots with hookups. Didn't even use the electric heater.

When was the last time you could back your truck right up to the lake and fish .
Image
Good test for the wood stove. Used it for about 3hrs then went to bed.
Image

Woke up this morning to 19° outside and 30° in the trailer. Completely foggy outside, couldn't see more than 10ft in front of ya.
By the time I got dressed and grabbed the camera, it had dissipated some.

Fired up the stove and cook top, made breakfast and then more fishing.

Man I love this truck. Going through Nephi and it's hills with wind was no problem.

Did more testing this weekend in the backyard.
Last time I felt I was losing heat through the roof vent. Ordered a insulated insert and gave it a try with the electric heater.
This gave me a chance to check other potential leaks.
I may make a insert for under the bed from some foam I have.
Could feel cold air coming up by the side door but once I cranked the heat to 70° it didn't matter anymore.
Window covering is on the list.

While I was at it I also ordered a new (stainless) 4" deck plate.
As for the roof vent insert. It did it's job and retained heat much longer.

Tonight's experiment is concerning:::; Heat Loss.

I wanted to see how much heat loss I get in a hour. Just for giggles.
Turned on the electric heater about a hour before the sun went down. Let it run for 45 minutes.
Opening up the sleeping bag helps.
Image

Then I shut it off. An hour later these were the temps. Still quite cozy in the sleeping bag.
Windows closed and haven't opened the door at all. Roof vent insert installed too.
Image

From 84° to 68 is 16° loss.

45° outside.

Now im just seeing what temp the lowest setting on the heater turns on at.

Thoughts on your barn door shower, see if you can find some tractor trailer cargo bar clamps

Something like this to keep them open to desired width?

Reese Explore 1390600 40" x 70" Ratcheting Cargo Bar https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01414B9HI/re ... UTF8&psc=1

Sorry to hear of your pupp loss:(

Almost forgot about the shower, it was put on the backburner for now.

Thanks. I still miss his snoring . Gotten used to that over the years.

Parts arrived today.
New stainless deck plate installed.
Talk about bling.
Image

Installed a damper about mid pipe.
Hopefully it helps keep the heat in.

Last night I stayed in the trailer (backyard camping) and fired up the stove.  Experimenting with the draft and different woods.
It low 20's and a strong wind. Opening the window only a 1/2" maybe less.  Once the fire was going I closed the stove damper and the upper about a 1/4 turn.  Seemed to help.
Things I burned was 1x1x5 Douglas fir and a few 1/2" pieces the same length.  Also burned some cherry tree branches.
Heated up good. Jumped in the sleeping bag with a wool moving blanket over the feet also helped.

Did try using a fan at the rear facing towards the back doors pointed up.  It helped the ceiling from getting hot and moved the warm air around better.
Slept great but didn't want to get out of the bag when I woke up.  40 inside.
Fired up the stove with a full can of pellets and tried making coffee with it which worked well.
One thing I noticed with the pellets is they seem to flame out quicker than I thought but smolder forever.
The stove didn't cool off for a few hours.

Turning the heat shield inside out (reflective side facing pipe) was the way to go and the stainless deck plate didn't even heat up.

I think im going to do 1 more test session next weekend to get the perfect camping recipe down using what I've learned last night.
Also Lowe's sells these "kindling" wood packs for $5
You can break em up by hand and work perfectly for getting the fire started

I enjoyed reading your detailed account of you testing your stove in below freezing temperatures. I vicariously experienced the fun you had. Love it!

Looks real good, but I really have to brag big time on my $200 Nuway (outdoor vented) propane heater/stove.

Nuway makes a small wood heater/stove too for around $150, but I prefer the propane. It's so simple and well made that I expect to use it for 30-years, if I can last that long.

Thank you. Glad you enjoyed it.

Your really gonna have to post some pics on your build, otherwise nobody is going to believe you.
The discussion of propane vs wood is for another place.

Ordered this (clamp on pipe) eco fan last night. It showed up this morning.
Also grabbed a CO detector.
Tested it out . Fan worked . I may try different spots. COdetector I put on the wall by the sink.
Alarm didn't turn on so that's good. ImageImageImage

I moved the eco fan down below the elbow. It worked even better moving the warm air forward.
Tested out different woods also.
Grabbed some Douglas fur and Oak from Lowes.
Douglas fur 3/4 x 1.5 was $1.88 for 6ft. Cheap. Popped and cracked alot .
Oak was $8.10 for 4ft. Spendy . Quiet burn and hotter.
Each piece was cut to 5" lengths.
Oak-- 10 pieces
D.F.-- 2 lengths = 38 pieces

Once the fire died down to coals. I put a 1/2 cup of pellets in.
This won hands down in terms of temps and burn time.

I think I have this tuned to the point of another camp out soon. ImageImage
