This is how a lot of sails are affixed to allow them to be hauled up and down on masts and yards;

The main item when Hand sewing is a "Palm" that holds the thimble for pushing the needle through the rope and canvas;

Finding a "Roping" style (has a section that protects the thumb when heaving the thread tightly.
The needles are also 'special', being triangular in shape and stouter then you Mom's or wife's stitching needles;

The book "Sailmaker's Apprentice" by Emiliano Marino has all the information you'll need about what and why.
It can turn into a fun hobby that can be done at the campsite or on a rainy weekend at home.

hank, thanks for the info. i do have a palm stitcher in my ‘survival kit’ that i haven’t even used yet,lol! but i do like jobs that i can do while
sitting on my butt, being retired and all :)
